I was using my tractor last night, when shifting from reverse to second, I felt a slight almost imperceptible thump and got an odd sense in the shift lever. The transmission appears locked up. It won"t go forward and pulls the engine down when I release the clutch. But I can"t get it out of gear as though its in a bind and has pressure on the gears. had to shut off the tractor and now can"t start it since its not in neutral. I have no clue where to start, please help!! |

| I agree that it sounds like the shift gates or more likely, the shift lever end is worn allowing the transmission to be bound up in two gears.
I would remove the shift cover. Inspect the gates. They "should be" all lined up in the middle when in Neutral. Get a big screw driver and move each individual gate to the neutral position. BUT (important) don't just force it. Have a helper rock the tractor forward and backward while you are doing it. If you are a lone worker like me, you can sort of lay on the side of the transmission and move the wheels with a foot. Sort of. Sometimes just jacking the rear end up so there is no pressure in any direction on either tire is all it needs.
With the cover off, inspect the shift lever. Use your dial caliper to measure the shift balls. They should be round and 0.500". If not, you will need to either weld them up or replace the lever. The lever is now being reproduced (I am fairly sure it is anyway). I just welded mine up then filed them back to the correct diameter. It took $0.03 of material but a while with the file.
Also while it is partially apart, replace the 3 sets of shift detent balls and the springs that push the balls into the shift rails. They get weak and the balls get worn to a smaller diameter. That allows for slop in the selection of the gears and that can also cause (or contribute to) the issue.
Hope that helps get you back in the saddle.

| Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeWear in gate mechanism will allow multiple gear engagements. If that has happened, the gears are very tight against each other, almost like a wound up spring, and need to relieve tightness/wound up condition before you can move them. May need to turn engine backwards via fan belt or pry bar in flywheel teeth.........or if wound from other end, rock tractor back & forward via hands on tire cleats. |

| | Thanks for the reply. I can"t imagine how that would be possible without a failure somewhere. Any idea on the mechanism/failure condition that would allow it to be jammed in both reverse and second? (i"m studying the shop manual at the moment. won"t get a chance to pull the cover on the transmission until this weeked) thanks again |

| Sounds like you need to pull the cover and have a look. It's possible it's stuck in reverse and in 2nd as well. |
