I purchased a power unit to get the 172cid engine (CONN 6015J, Mfg 5E15) and accessories for use in my recently purchased Powermaster 861. I tore this engine down because I could not turn it over. I found water had gotten into cylinder 2 & 3 from the vertical exhaust. I got past that and intend to re-sleeve w/new pistons. It appears it has been freshly overhauled (shadetree??) with a different crankshaft, possibly from a diesel. It has "69NN6302B on the side with a gear next to the center main bearing. There has been considerable discussion by the experts who kindly post in this forum, about the various cranks historically used in the 172 series engine. I would appreciate any opinions on this crank: is it a diesel, is it useable in a gas and is it a series that had problems. Thanks, Jim

FYI - there are many many more con rods used than cranks. Be sure to weigh each one and get them all the same. I rebuilt a diesel that had one rod/piston that was 90 some grams different weight.

Thanks John. I will have rods/pistons weighed and matched. Does anyone know if this crank was used in CONN engines (year?) and can it be ground if needed?

Thanks Shaun. My '59 parts book does not list this crank #. Do you happen to know what years this number was used?

This engine was supposed to be running when removed from service. But who knows how well or how smooth if this ran a balancer in a diesel. It has a "D" on it marked in the yellow crayon often used in a salvage yard.

Yes diesel crank will work ok in gas engine. Some 1960-61 gas tractors came from factory with diesel cranks in them.
