Hi guys/gals-----finally getting time to tweak some of the "want to fix, not need to fix" items on my 1955 Ford 860.

There is a small oil leak somewhere near the front of the valve cover. I am picking up a new gasket at my local CNH Dealer this week.

Should I use a gasket sealer, and if so, do I need it on both sides of the gasket? If I need gasket sealer, what is the flavor of the day??

I have some good permatex high temp copper that I used on one of the 8N"s when I repaired a manifold leak earlier this year.

Thanks----Tim

If using a cork gasket, seal the gasket to the rocker arm cover. Do not apply sealant to the bottom side. You will now be able to remove and reinstall the cover many times without replacing the gasket so long as it is not over tightened.

If using a neoprene gasket, take it back and get a cork one.

High temp RTV on both sides if you want to ensure no leaks. One side only (tin side) if you want to be able to get it apart again without using all your cuss words.

make sure the valve cover is not warped and the flange area is flat and not caved up..

make sure the breather is not clogged up.. putting pressure on the valve cover.

Not that this is an 8N but I just re-sealed my valve cover on my lawn tractor. It was leaking when I would shut down and it would sit. Start up and the exh would smoke until it was burned off. I used the High-Temp (orange) RTV. That mower V/C gets hot and its working great.

Should have told you to put a thin layer on each side of gasket and hand tighten immediately. Wait 1 hour and torque to specs.
