I don't know about y'all, but I am having a dickens of a time reaching that little parking brake T-shaped lever while I'm sitting on the seat.

I admit that I've put on a little poundage since I've been retired.

But it's always been unhandy for me to reach, and now with arthritis it's worse than ever. If it was just 2" or 3" longer, it would help tremendously.

Since most of my place is uneven, I'm always having to set the brake before getting down to adjust something or changing implements. So it's either that or shut it down each time, instead.

I've never heard any complaints from anyone else on this board, so maybe it's just a problem I have. I've wondered if this aftermarket seat that came on the tractor when I bought it, sits up higher than the original. If that's the case, then I can understand why the lever is so low.

Since I can't turn back time to when I was younger, I've thought about making some sort of extention to either fasten to it in some way or weld it.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Ronnie

On my 69 5000 I took piece of endgate rod and welded it to "T" handle and now easy to reach.

Interesting, thanks for all the info & pic.

I guess Ford wised up to the problem later on. I guess I'll check with Ford/NH first and if they no longer carry the part, I'll make it.

My aching back says "Thanks Everyone".

OK; so that is another job I'll have to get around to.

One of my tractors (3000 or 4600) is a lot easier to lock the brakes on, I cannot remember which; I'm guessing the 4600. I'll sort that out next month after I move.

I have the same complaint on my 4000, especially after using the 4600 or 5600 which are more convenient as others have posted. I plan to "adjust" mine this spring when the weather is a little warmer to make it match the newer style.

Brian,
I was going to mention modifying the old style in my post below but forgot. It would not be hard to do - add some length to the existing rod and make a bracket so the T handle was higher up on the tranny.

This is on my cobbled 3000. It is from a 3600.
I had to slightly elongate the hole in the 3000 step plate to make it work. I do prefer it to the short ones as you don't have to bend over so far to use it. One bad thing about it is I catch my pants leg on it sometimes. Makes for a moment of panic when you are trying to hit the brakes. But am used to it now and check my pants leg when I mount the tractor.
The early 3600s don't have this style. I think they changed it in 1978 or so.

30 series tractors had the highest/longest lever. There's a bracket that mounts to the housing to support it, then the longer rod/lever. Might have to put a different hole in the footboard... I think that would work for you.
The flip side is that you catch that on with the boot when you're getting on...

3600 brake locks were longer/higher, and locks from 3430/3930's were higher yet.

Later models had it mounted higher (at least on 4600's and bigger). Grandpa allways complained about that on his 7000 too. When it was at the dealer's one time, it came back with a bracket that attached to the top of the transmission and a longer rod running from the handle to the pawl. Factory part, but not sure if it would fit a 3000 or not...or if it's even still available.
