Ok, I am the proud new owner of a 1968 5000 Diesel. It has the 10 speed select-o-speed transmission. I bought the I & T manual and adjusted my clutch bands following the directions on the manual. It is a little better but I still slip in 1 Reverse, 3,4,7 and 8th gears. (I have not tried the higher gears as the area I have to test is not suitable for that speed) Another onservation I have it that 1 and 2 work fine, when you apply the brakes it lugs down the tractor but keeps going. 3,4 brakes will stop the tractor and 'slip' the transmission. 3 and 4 also seem slower than 1 and 2. The same situation applies for 7th and 8th.

I am going to work on getting the pressure testing equipment to test my pressures, but am I totally out of luck? I have been told that a select-o-speed transmission is nearly impossible to find parts for? What else should I check?

Can it be fixed or should I start looking for an 8 speed syncro shift tractor that needs an engine??

I have not checked the filter or the suction screen yet, as I have not decifered the part number listed for the transmission fluid into an actual product yet.

I did check the fluid and it was not drastically low, and it looked to be ok. So if you know what type of fluid to put it that would be a good thing for me to know. I am new to Ford, so I am learning how their systems work, and my Ford/New Holland Dealer is a newer dealership so they are not up on the "old stuff" too much.

Thanks for the help so far, I really appreciate it.

JD:

The S-O-S transmissioin uses hydraulic oil that meets CNH 134D specifications. CNH current hydraulic oil meets this spec as do many generic brands.

I would certainly check the condition of the oil as well as the suction strainer and filter before looking further.

Start with the basics.

Does it have the proper amount of the correct oil that is in good condition?

Has the filter been changed recently?

Most S-O-S parts are still available from CNH but some are expensive.

8 spd synchro?

you can get a good list of diagnostics from john smith.. however.. I would go ahead and get that test gauge too.

What about putting in park and rolls. Someone told me to put in in 5th and and shove into park. It holds tight then. Meaning I did it and it works.

park is only achieved when all pressure to the servos have bled off. and in fifth you already have one band that is locked/applied so you only need one to bleed off then to get park.
