i notice that my ford 630 now starts to smoke from the valve breather cap when started. after it warms up the smoke slows down when at idle but returns when engine is reved up. also the engine will blow some white or blue smoke when initialy put under load but clear up almost instanly like when going from 3rd to 4th gear the tractor will belch out a plum of smoke and then clear up. what might i be looking at.

if your tractor doesn"t have a "draft tube" to ventilate the crankcase, the breather cap will have some "smoke coming fromm it for awhile after a cold start up. There"s condensate in the oil that will evaporate as the crankcase oil heats up and then just vaious vapors from the oil. The rings are not at there operating temperture nor are the cylinders so there is some blow by also. When the engine is at operating temprature and the oil has hit it"s steady state temperature most of what you will see come out the breather is blow by caused by worn rings. If your exhaust smokes at idle and not at high rev"s under load, then the valve guides and seals are worn. If the exhausts smokes under load then it"s the oil control rings that are worn.
My guess from your description("...going from 3rd to 4th gear the tractor will belch out a plum of smoke and then clear up.") is yo when you step on the clutch to shift, the manifold vacuum increases and the pulls oil past the guides ands seals, whic are worn" into the ylinder and then you see smoke. As the vacuum decreases when picking up load(the throttle opens) the problem goes away. I think you might be looking at some cylinder head work in the future. If your plugs aren"t fouling and the oil consumption isn"t excessive, then I wouldn"t worry about it.

type of oil can contribute.. a diesel rated hd oil actually has additives to control and minimize the amount of oil that is picked up in the crankcase and then blown out as vapor. Gas oils usually do not have this rating. some vapor is common and even normal as water vapor is expelled when cold. these tractor engines do not have a pvc system where these vapors are sucked back into the engine and burnt like on a car. be sure to run an hd tractor oil for better overall wear, protection and less crankcase venting. (shell rotella, chevron delo, or mobil delvac are examples of hd oils in 15w-40 or even 5w-40 availlible most anywhere if you look). Mystic and royal purple and others also make these hd oils. Car oils are made to be changed often. hd oils have extra additives to fight moisture, acids, and wear preventive additives for hd use plus handle the soot loading of diesel use and keep the wear down. These oils are designed for a 10,000 mile change interval in hd equipment. Car oils usually avoid these additives as the additives can coat the catylitic converter due to its high heat and render is usless. The high wear additives are attracted to exteame hot areas and coat the hot metals with things like phosphorours and zync that reduce friction and then drop the heat. Unfortunatly catyltic converters dont like to be coated and cooled down.

a lil is ok.. even moderate, as long as it doesn't become a user problem. my 850 smokes a bit from the breather too.. but still works strong. when she won't run anymore.. I'll worry about it.

Well that tractor is 54 year plus old so yep it should blow a little smoke. A lot depends on a lot of things. Oil weight you use, how you use it, when the last time was it had an engine rebuild, and how long it might have sat with out running. If it doesn't foul out the plug and it doesn't use a lot of oil I would not worry about it. Shoot at one time I smoked also and I'm still doing ok LOL. Now if you are really worried about it then you need to do a compression check and if that shows low number you then need to have the engine rebuilt at a tune of $1500 plus

that would be blow by worn rings and cylinder walls it will get worse till eventualy there is more smoke coming out of the breather then the exhaust
