I have a Ford 4400 that is still fairly new to me. I don't have any manuals.I've read on this board about the pto spinning when disengaged. As I understand it, this is just some residual hydro power causing it...that there is no real power driving the pto when the handle is in. However, in my case, the pto seems to be under power whether the handle is pushed in or pulled out. I used a board against the spinning shaft to see if I could stop the pto by applying friction but could not. What kind of problem am I looking at? Is this just a control cable problem or does it go deeper? I probably could have sold the tractor today except for that problem. I still might be able to make the deal if I can resolve the problem. Thanks in advance! |

Do those beasts have a 2 stage clutch? my Ferg 35 did and that's a symptom of the clutch being adjusted too far (worn clutch) can't disengage secondary clutch |
Not even close. Hydraulic wet disc clutch internal to the transmission.
Jim. I'm with the other two. If a rotary cutter with some load on it won't stop the disengaged PTO, you've got problems. The board on the PTO trick isn't good test, nor is it a wise one.

| | What was the ambient temperature? If the oil is cold it will take some effort to stop the PTO even when disengaged. It will take far less when the oil is at operating temperature but it will still run on. This is normal as there is no PTO brake. It should not run your cutter through anything when off even with cold oil. Dean |

| If you have a Brush Hog run over some tall grass with it. If it keeps cutting the PTO isn't disengaging. I don't see any other safe way to check this. Please don't use the board you can easily loose you arm or life and DO NOT WORK ON OR IN THE AREA OF THE PTO while tractor is running! |
