We have a Jubilee that has been changed over to 12 volt alternator system for some time now. It has been working just fine until today. For some reason it will not start unless we pull the coil wire and just hold it far enough from the coil so that a spark jumps from the coil to the wire. It starts and runs just fine this way. We put the wire on the coil just far enough that it jumped the spark and used the tractor for several hours this way. If we push the wire all the way in the coil the engine stops. We tried two different coils. The wires are new, we tried a different coil wire, and we changed the points and condenser. Nothing changed it still will not run unless the coil wire is jumping a spark. Any IDEAS??? Thanks for any help. |

It's not just you and Joe. Champions do not work well in Ford engines for some reason. |

| I have so many of them either not work at all (NEW) and some that worked for a little while and then fail. I know some people will swear by them but I only swear at them. |

Found the problem in reply to Joe J., 11-07-2009 16:10:28

| I found the problem It was the rotor. It had a little mark on the topside just under the center tab. When I turned it over I could see a small mark that it must have been arching through. It only had a few hours on it but apparently it must have had a flaw in it. Thanks to everyone for their advise. I really appreciated it. |

| Run a jumper wire from the plus side (hot)of the battery to the plus side (switch)of the coil. This eliminates all wiring and the ignition switch. I know!!!!!! But try it anyway. |

| | Though it would be odd, for all 4 to so fail at the same time, failed/fouled plugs can cause such symptoms. The long gap that the spark must jump causes the induced voltage to increase much higher than normal, which can produce a spark across the gap of a plug that would not fire at normal secondary voltage. Have you changed the plugs? Are the wires copper core or TVRS? Dean |

| New plugs about a week ago. Interesting idea though. He did chock out the tractor when the problem started. The odd thing is that we plowed with the tractor this afternoon for several hours and it still would stop if we pushed the coil wire in. So I don't think its the plugs but I will take a look at them in the morning. Thanks Dean. |

| joe years ago i used to use the same method to clear out fouled spark plugs would pull off plug from offending cylnder and let that thing jump about 1 1/2" for 30 secs and usually it would clean up and run fine once the cyl got warmed up al |

| Sounds like Dean and you are on the same track. I will pull the plugs in the morning and maybe even put the old ones back in just to see if it helps. Thanks Al. |

| joe i forgot to add that method also works on plugs that cracked along the insulators inside. they could look like new on the inside and when you test them out of the cylinder and get good spark but when you put them back in the cylinder they short out the compression forces it to discharge along the crack in the insulator i know it sounds screwy i've had it happen to me several times i,ve noticed that over torqueing of the plugs and also heavy fuel flooding in very cold weather al |
