Drained 5 gallons of rotten gasoline out of the tank and rebuilt the Holley 2 barrel. Found spark all the way to the plugs. Cranked the engine over with the plugs removed until gas filled the fuel bowl in the carb. Put the plugs in, hit the starter and the beast fired up. The brakes don't work so I drove it around my place slowly. The engine sounds like it has a bad case of valve clearance misadjustment. I have to go to work tomorrow so that will have to wait until next week.
Success is sweet.

I have replaced a many a piston cuzz the total timing was two high on 292 engines,,, also I adjust the valves to spec then start the engine with the valve covers off,,, find the clickers and adjust them with the engine run'n to take the click out of'em.

Zaust noise finder,,, use a length of 3/8" hose of any kind up to your ear and run the other end around the zaust,,, I guarantee you will pinpoint a zaust leak if you have one.

Most all zaust manifold leaks on a ford are man made,,, some dumb chit installs a zaust gasket tween the manifold and head,,, then its all down hill from their

Drove 63 F100 all most daily for 35 years. Finally wore it out? Seen 99,999.9 so many times I dont remember. Put several engines, clutches rear ends. Over loaded, over reved. 292 seemed to be the toughest engine Iv had. Got several for parts and a string of 63/64 F100-F700. Valve lash is .015 hot running. Lack of oil to rocker arms was there biggest dow fall.

My memory isn't the best but I have installed a remote oiling line to a hollow stud to get oil to the rocker shaft and valve tops. The factory oiling wasn't sufficient and would cause wear. Google 292 oiling and you should find info about the remote oiling.I think one cause could be plugged passage another is a cam bearing turning and stopping the passage.anyway check for oil at the rockers.

Neat old trucks, I have a '64 F-600, on the road with ag plates. It has the 292, though not sure if that is the HD or other version. Oil pressure is way up there, starts quicker than anything I own, 2bbl carb, not sure what kind, 4 spd, with 2 spd rear, top speed is 62 MPH, above that it is just screaming, drove it 800+ miles home with my car on the back, has an Obeco grain body. I really like how it rides and people do stare at it, I enjoy the heck out of driving it, that 5 spd is probably a huge plus, the 4 spd, needs another gear behind that motor.

any exhaust leaks will sound like its tearing it self apart. check and fix those and it'll sound better. is it a 292 or 312 engine? And hopefully you dont have the horrible holley christmas tree carb and have the newer modern two barrel..

oops could be a six with a single.. there were very torque, but not fast.. designed much like a tractor engine.. run all day under load, but not a dragster. is it a '58 model??

Yes, it's a '58 with the 292 V8 and a modern style Holley 2V- not the "teapot". It has solid lifters. The exhaust pipe between the 2 manifolds crosses over from left to right in the front of the engine and then exits out the rear end of the right manifold.

That's great. Most likely solid lifters. I think they came out with hydraulics in the 332's in mid 1958. That's one of the Y blocks which were pretty beefy. 49K and it's just getting broken in. Seems to me you need to strip her down to ther frame and do a resto on her. I know, just what you wanted to hear. ;)

If I remember right, that engine has solid lifters...so there would be more clatter than what we're used to hearing with most engines having hydraulic lifters. Would be worth checking/adjusting anyway. Good to hear it's running!
