could any of the pros help me on this.Iam looking at buying a 75-3000 gas so I took it out and worked it for awhile cutting some grass and the pto will not stay in on its own. I had to hold it in with my foot resting on it to keep it in gear.Could anyone give some ideas on this problem can it be fixed by plate on side that the lever comes through or does did too come apart. any advice would help. The pto shaft does have play and I know the seal needs to be replaced. It should be repairable without splinting tractor. David if you could look that up for me I would app. it.Any more help Iam listening. Thanks Brent in Tn.

If the pto seal is leaking a lot I would venture that the problem is right there at the rear bearing/seal/circlip and not on the other end of the pto shaft. As I stated before, pto popping out of gear is a very common problem on Fords with rear bearing/circlip issues.

Had a 3000 gas that did the same thing. Turns out it was a small lever inside housing that connects to shift lever. Mine was bent and didn't hold enough pressure on detent ball. Don't think it was tough or expensive job. Been awhile. I have a manual at home. I can look up name of that part if you need me to.

Twisted splines on the front end of the PTO output shaft is a common cause. Not a big deal, but more expensive than a snap ring out of place. A shaft with endplay can easily require a bearing retainer housing to fix correctly.

It is usually a simple check and simple fix. With the tractor turned off grab onto the pto shaft and see if you can slide it in and out at all. Often the circlip that holds the bearing in place will fail and this will allow it to pop out of gear. The problem, and the fix has been the same on these smaller Fords since 1939.
Simple fix, usually not expensive, but a good reason to knock off a couple/few hundred $ off the price.
Good luck.
