I picked up the Trisco lift cylinder kit Thursday, reading the manual now, getting ready to dismantle the tractor hydraulics.

Is there anything that I should be aware of when I lift the top cover off? Any pins/springs that could possible drop out?

I read and it stands to reason that I need to lift the top cover straight up as there is some sort of a tube that passes the oil from the pump into the top cover and to the lift cylinder.

I would appreciate and words of wisdom that would be forth coming as this is a first for me. Thanks guys for any help offered.

I just kind of remember the combine but I would guess it was probably a model "A" engine but it could also have been a Chrysler engine also.

As far a as honing the cylinder, no I did not which could be a mistake, I don't know. I did rub some emery cloth around on the scratches to make sure that there was no burrs.

I paid $450 for the lift cylinder and piston. The lift cylinder itself was complete, relief valve and control valve components

Thanks for the comments about the pictures, did you notice the one just before the tractor. That was a pull combine that he converted to a self propelled combine. This was about 1944 when WWII was raging and stuff like that was very hard to come by. You are right, for me the pictures are priceless.

Charlie,

Nice of you to post your pix.

You had a couple of you and your father on his homemade tractor. Cool! A priceless treasure!!

Hope your work cured your unit of the hic-cups.

What did you have to give for the used part?

Was this just the cyl or the entire cover?

Last Thursday I made it to Albany Or. and found a used lift cylinder that was in prettery fair condition. Friday started putting the thing back togeather. The first thing that I found that had a problem was the gasket set that my NH dealer ordered for me.

The back up ring for the piston was not long enough to go all of the way around the piston. It had a gap of about 1/8 inch so I used the old backup ring. I did have to trim off some bures that had rubbed on the edge that slid along the cylinder. The other thing that I found was the "o" rings for the aux plate were not included. I had to make a mad dash to Medford and find the "O" rings that have a rectangluar cross section. The NH dealer did not have all of those rings so I had to use the regular round "o"ring.

I did take a number of pictures and posted them on my photobucket site. I did this more for any one that like me this is their first time getting into the hydraulics of their tractor. It was not a bad job espacely when you have an engine hoist. If you look you will see my home made engine hoist, it will lift 1500# with the boom extended as seen in the picture.

This is the link but if it does not work do a search for keprecision, photobucket. Check the left hand column for the 73 ford 4000.

I do appreciate all of your input, thanks.

Charlie.

Thanks Rick for the reply.

I made some phone calls and have found a place in Albany Or. that says they should have several. I am going up tomorrow and take a look at what they have.

Charlie,

Two cents from a novice. Having just rebuilt the lift on my 4400 last year I can't imagine honing the cylinder out .005" or less would cause a problem. That new o-ring fits very snug in the cylinder.

The part number for the cylinder is C9NN478E. It's not interchangeable with the 2000/3000 cylinder. It is available new from NH - Hold your breath - $2092.41 from Messicks.

Darn, I thought that more people would than this would have some suggestions as to a place to purchase a used lift cylinder or even if there is a way that this one could be salvaged.

Saw used one on ebay a while ago for a 3000. Search on Ford 3000. Check on CHN parts site to see if the 4000 is the same part.

Used but not abused part would be the better way to go, IMO.

Ok I just now got the lift cylinder out and off of the top cover and the looks of it is not good.

The cylinder bore has a number of groves on the wall. I don't think any of them are more than .005 deep.

Do any of you know of a way that these cylinders can be repaired? Is it possible to bore the cylinder out to a larger size? Or maybe chrome the bore? The piston looks to be ok at this time although there are some small scoring, but I think it will be alright.

This is a 1973 4000 3 cylinder, for a change I remembered to give the pertinent information.

Or does any one have a used one with out the groves?

Charlie,

You are a regular here. This topic (hiccup) gets lots of attention. Many suggestions and cures come only close to the answer as to why.

However, I do remember reading about an absolute cure for the 3 pt 'hiccup'. Only, I don't know just where.

I just came from the archives looking for 'hiccup' and noticed there are, depending how you spell it, 116 references in the FORD forum and 75 in the N forums.

I'd suggest you start reading there. Not being a smart a$, just pointing you in that direction.

One that I do remember reading was a remark from the FORD dealer stating that it is normal.... I don't think so. Much points to the 'unloading valve'. Also towards internal leaks or leakdowns in the lift cover. [thank you soundguy].

Some of them suggest CHN 0-ring and/seal (ONLY) in certain applications. Don't forget the 'N' boards, similar functions and design.

So, have a look and I'd like to hear what you come up with.

All good advice!!!

Q) why are you doing this?

I ask because, you may need to re-adjust the linkage prior to reinstalling this.

Steve, the lift has developed a pretty good hickup. You have a load on the 3pt the thing drops a bit and than picks back up and if the engine is shut down it takes a short time and the load is sitting on the ground.

I was fortunate. mine did not need readjustments, just cleaning out and some new 0-rings.

You can do this yourself, or, as suggest elsewhere on this forum, take it, (the cover), to the dealer and have it done (about $75).

NOTE, clean or replace the internal filters and valves while you are in there.

After reading and looking at many different articles and diagrams, I have to say, it was much simpler (to me) after I had it apart. BTW, I was not able to access the lower pickup filter from the top, I think Butch got to his through the side somewhere. You may be able to find out in the archives. Anyway, enjoy yourself and don't be surprised if you have some leftover 0-rings etc. (packaging for additional types of units)...sl

Gentle use of a pry bar may be necessary to unstick the old gasket. I was able to do mine by myself but I wished I had a helper.. it's heavy.

Bolt a short section of chain into the two holes where the seat was bolted, if you have a way to lift from an overhead beam, etc. Without that I would have had a bear of a time by myself.

Only thing I can add is that it is heavy and awkward. Have a helper ready. Also, don't set it down hard on the inside linkage. Turn it over to set it down.

what 4000? the 62-64 model 4 cyl or the 65+ 3 cyl. if the 4 cyl model.. the back will need to come up a bit first so that the front o fthe lift cyl clears the housing a bit. can't say about the 3 cyl model.

the piping that passes oil to the cyl runs up the edge inside the casting and is oring sealed.. nothing should fall / drop out o fthe cover when you pull it, unless it already had a parts problem.

need more info for more precise answer..

Charlie,
What Sounder and John are saying is correct. The lift cover needs to move toward the rear as it is coming up so the lift cylinder will clear the opening. But it has to come straight up for the first 3" to let the pickup tube and a cam that sticks up through the gasket on the right side clear the cover. It helps to have two people working with it, but I did mine alone by securing a pipe across the fenders on the canopy brackets, then running a come-along to the seat bolts.
Hope this helps.
Butch
