I have just bought a 600 five speed and it jumps out of 3rd gear when pulling or coasting down hill. Can't hold it in gear. I have fixed this problem years ago several times but I have forgotten what parts were required to be replaced to fix it so it will stay in gear. I might could figure it out by tearing into it but would like to know if some of you have done it lately and can give me some ideas????? ????

Zane , The two most common fixes that I know about(learned from retired Ford mechanics and trial and error)are #1 replacement of Third and Reverse gears and the slider assembly, and taking all end play out of the mainshaft that they ride on, and #2 readustment, repair, or replacement of the shift forks, shift gates, or shift rails and excessive wear in the top cover where the shifter goes through it. I have been able to fix problems with the second method so far , and I just finished one this week , but I have another one coming in two weeks so who knows what that one will bring for problems, it also jumps out of third gear only . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Thanks for the information. That is sorta the same thing I have been thinking it would take to fix it. Do you know where I could get the best deal on gears etc. parts for the transmission? New parts I mean. I know these 5 speeds are bad on the 3rd gear and wouldn't want to try a used one.

By the way I have some gears for the 4 speed transmission.(NAA 600 etc. if you ever need some used gears for them. Not sure about the second gear as that is the weak gear in the 4 speed and it is already gone I think. I would look though if you might need one in the future since it sounds like you do tractor repair.

Hi Zane, Yes I do repair tractors, cars, trucks, equipment, etc.,I have an Uncle who Farms around 400 acres, and another Uncle who runs a logging company so it was hard not to be running and fixing things at a young age. Then I did the dealership route for 12 years, and got sick of being indoors and now I am back outdoors doing equipment repair, again. 1953-1964 Ford tractors are my full time hobby side of the business, I bought out the old Elenco Products Co. about 10 years ago and reproduce quite afew parts for the front ends, I do S-O-S repair, I have 3 of my own S-O-S's 2 Diesel and 1 Gas all 4x4's. I buy most of my parts right from two of my local Ford dealers, some Ford stuff is expensive but I have never had a failure(so far)from Ford parts and sometimes you have no choice if you want new parts ,Dual disc clutches that are not built by Ford have been my worst aftermarket failure, so it's Ford or take it somewhere else on those. Most of the five speed parts are still available from Ford but at a cost of over a $1000 so I have been lucky so far as to not have had to buy any gears yet. I have some good salvage yards out here(I live in Mass.)but nobody like to part out trannies anymore so parts are getting harder to find if you don't want a complete unit, I know where there are some gears at one place but didn't see any forks or gates or cover parts but they might be there, if you need anything let me know. You wouldn't happen to have a control valve for a power steering box, I got one apart that is split in two, and a new one is not cheap, and I can't even find a used box so far. Thanks Tony Jacobs
