I've had a lot of problems with my starter. It's been rewired (armature) a new bendix, a new starter and ignition switch and a new battery. The other day it turned over but quit. My BIL couldn't get the starter to turn bypassing the ignition system. Today at the repair shop, it worked fine. I know you can adjust the starter switch position, but he wondered if the shift linkage is adjustable. Could that be the problem? I'm running out of things to look for.

"Make sure the Ground lead attachment point is clean and you should fit a longer lead and attach it to one of the bolts close to the starter...John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com "

John;

Made all the difference. Starts like a champ!! Ground cable may have been bad inside. I bought a longer cable and sconnescted it to one of the bolts in the housing. Thank you and everyone else too. The repairman replaced the starter post also. But it was the ground that made it not start.

No adjustment on the starter linkage other than the switch. Have you tried shorting out the Starter Switch across the two heavy terminals, just watch out for sparks when you do this. If it starts when you do this it is the Switch. You may find that elongating the holes for the screws on the switch will allow it to slide forward a little more. Make sure the Ground lead attachment point is clean and you should fit a longer lead and attach it to one of the bolts close to the starter...John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com

It sounds like pretty global terminology to me!

"My BIL couldn't get the starter to turn bypassing the ignition system"

If the starter motor did not turn over with a jumper lead from battery direct to the starter, the problem will not be the transmission activated starter switch.

I'd be looking at the earth lead. Is it still attached at the back of the dash? If so go buy a new lead and run direct from the battery to a starter motor mounting bolt. Makesure all connections are clean and bright.

Nay bloody worries mate! Too bloody right it is. Earth is ground, ground is earth. Drink too many Fosters or castlemaines, you fall on either. Ground wires are brown, 'cause that is the color of earth... or so it was explained to me... pretty confusing, because Australian dirt is red... or it was last time I was there... I am getting confused.... btw, from the sound of what you are trying, the starter might be bad or jammed.
