I have almost one of each, the 50 is the only dead horse. I am going to presume the heavier, more adaptable steering was the main mechanical change- I don't say improvement- the solid bar workbull front axle is only needed with an industrial loader or 'in the woods' work. Drawback of a 40 or 50 over... under? a 35? steering is not an improvement unless powered, the airfilter is a mile away under a complex fragile grill, a heavy awkward hood, a manifold that is different from a 35's in that the carb bolts are almost a 'captured nut' affair, with a muffler above it nearly touching the gas tank- and all that makes it seem like you are sitting on the floor compare to driving and looking down the hood of a 35. A 65 has all those dreary changes, but the HP and size make it worth the bother, otherwise, 35's and 135's- except the hoods once again, are perfection in their power range.... [Reply]   [No Email]

But seriously, that F40/50 manifold is a real PITA to remove the carb nuts. I have one little old stubby ford wrench that I use to get them off, but it's still a pain. Dan [Reply]  [No Email]

Altona is where all old Standards should go to die... I really don't have a bone to pick with 40's or 50's, except as I still need to put all my antique collection to work now and then, the steering and hoods irritate me more than those on a 35.
