The original subject was "te20 stalls going up hill in all gears except reverse".

Similar problem on a 49 TE 20. The tractor is up north at my cottage and runs fine and starts like a charm hot, warm or freezing cold. Have the issue with not really stalling but gets very sluggish on up hills or side hills not down hill though. Pulled the carb. off and the floats look like they have collapsed in a bit. ok fair bit! I drilled a small hole and pushed them out again and sealed again with a small piece of copper sheet and solder. Will not be able to try for a few weeks till back up. Is there anything else i should check before i head back north

In addition to what Jerry is telling you, have you noticed if the Engine Governor is trying to speed up the engine, this is the Lever at the back of the Generator, with the link rod to the Carb. as the load comes on the Engine it should move forward and speed it up.My bet it is the Governor or the Advance/retard in the Distributor. If you don't know much about Distributors, get some help with it, it may need overhauling as it is quite old. The Governor you can see easily if it is working or not and if it isn't it will be adjustment, but we can't say what until you tell what is hapening...John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com

Using a timing light, check the initial timing at 400 rpm and make sure the centifugal advance on the distributor is working correctly. If it is sticking and won"t advamnce or it"s it"s too retarded initially the engine will be sluggish.

Make sure you have the correct setting on the main jet. 1-1/4 turns out is a good starting point and do not go below 1 full turn out on the main jet.

Make sure the aircleaner is not restricted because that will limit WOT horsepower.

Thanks will see what i can do. Have no timing light but will see if i can come across one. Has lots of power just a problem on hills so that is what put me towards the carb and float. If what i did corrected it i will post when back from camp

Well back from my property and tractor/carb back together. It will climb walls now. The issue was the carb and it works better than it ever had. Thanks to all for your replies.
