I'm still pretty new with tractors, and I haven't done alot with it yet and I'm getting ready to work on my cooling system. First off, I noticed I have a 16 lb radiator cap and I was told I need a 7 lb. It does force some water out of the overflow hole, so I was just wondering what the symptoms of an incorrect radiator cap are, or if you need a 7 lb and you have a higher poundage, is that okay? Thanks in advance. |

Make sure it is a 7# cap and don't fill radator all the way to the top. Leave level down a few inches.

The 16 lb cap won't "do" anything the tractor is not already doing. What a pressure cap does is allow the engine to run hotter without boiling. (the higher the pressure, the higher the boiling point)

Another potential problem is that the radiator is designed for a certain max f pressure, in this case 7 psi. Having it run as high as 16 psi can cause some damage especially to an older radiator that"s probabaly somewhat weakened by age and use.

I don't know how much it has been run with this radiator cap. I bought it from a tractor dealer who had picked it up at an auction. Supposedly it was a farm auction that had 7 old tractors stored in a barn, and the Fergie was the only one that started up with just fresh gas added.

That speaks volumes for the fergy's.Don't trash your temp guage until you check it. Like they say the higher the cap the higher the boiling point. Take it loose from the neck and submerge in boiling water or torch the tip.

Pressure will build up too high and might force open holes and definitely cause overflow when you park it. Get the correct cap. NAPA sells them. You can ask for a cap for an old 4 cylinder Scout (1960s) and you will be ok, in case your NAPA doesn't have tractor listings.

Thanks! Looks like a simple place to start diagnosing my cooling system. I'm pretty new with tractors, it seems to be pretty good mechanically, but the temp gauge seal dried and broke so the needle doesn't function and then I've had coolant coming out the overflow. Going to change the temp. guage and radiator cap first and flush the radiator and go from there. So far, I've just been driving it around the yard once a week to keep it going but being careful not to get it hot.

| | the radiator on my 1957 TO-35 is still working fine, but i had to have a few holes repaired last fall. I have a 7 psi cap, but the radiator repair tech told me to just leave the cap loose, that the coolant system will work fine on these old tractors and you do not have to worry about pulling up to the garage and spilling out coolant through the over flow tube. Since the system uses the old green coolant, it is dangerous to grandkids and pets, has a sweet taste, so they say, and pets will drink it. with the cap loose, system stays cool and does not spill over when i stop. also puts less pressure on the old high dollar radiator. have you checked the price of a replacement radiator, on mine you have to buy the radiator then tech has to unsolder, remove the lower attachment brackets and resolder them onto the new radiator. he said i did not want to go there unless all else failed. plus the new replacement radiators are not made as heavy or of the same quality material as the old ones. all i know is he fixed it for $40 bucks and i am driving the tractor every day with no radiator problems. |

Antifreeze does have a sweet taste. I got a taste once while working on my 806. Don't remember exactly what happened to cause that. Anyway, when I realized I tasted the antifreeze, I then realized why they say animals will drink it. It was kinda good. (Twisted, I Know.) -Andy
