What you didn't do is place the PTO lever in drive when you pulled out the PTO shaft. Now when you turn the PTO to get it to slot into the Sliding collar, it is just turning the collar and is very difficult to get it to slot into the splines. Make sure that you place the PTO Lever into the Drive position and you should be able to fit your PTO shaft easily...John(UK)..fergusontractors@hotmail.com

I have had a similar problem with a MH 50 and JD's suggestion was the only way I could solve it. And he is correct that having a second person to push on the PTO shaft while you maneuver thru the ports helps quite a bit. The left side port is a little trickier to put back, so if you can align it by only opening the right port that might save a little trouble, but in my case I had to have both ports open and use two hands, one from each side, to get the shaft in the right place. The left port has the 'finger' that pushes the collar that controls the PTO and you will have to put it in the groove when you replace the port. Not really difficult, but different than replacing the right port.

Hey H.B.

An expert I'm not, but have you tried pulling off one of the two inspection port covers under the seat to your right and left. They are round with a 6 bolt hole pattern.

Once you pull ONE of them off you can see into the hydraulics of the tractor.

You should be able to see the end of your PTO shaft almost in line with the hole in the pump housing(large square box mounted to bottom of tractor).

The end of the PTO shaft just slides into that hole and locks into that collar.

You should be able to turn the shaft by hand until it lines up in the hole, or get a helper to turn the shaft at the rear of the tractor until you get it lined up. A little tapping at the rear of the shaft wouldn't hurt.

You then should be able to bolt the PTO in place.

You can even start up the tractor with the inspection cover off, and make sure that the PTO is turning before you close it up.

DON'T EVER STICK YOUR HANDS INTO THE INSPECTION PORT HOLES WHILE THE TRACTOR IS RUNNING!!!!!!!!!! SHUT THE TRACTOR DOWN FIRST!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK!

This could be your problem . This photo from the Engineer's blog . He is a very skilled and talented man who seems to spend much of his time fixing other peoples muck ups including those caused by dodgy spare parts . Apparently this pto bearing carrier /housing problem is very wide spread. Comparing your old one minutely to the replacement is probably a good place to start
