I just did a compression test on my motor. the low cyl. was 62 - the high was 80. Not great compression. I do not have coolant in the oil. Could my issue be as simple as the valves not seating?? Thanks. |

Make sure you"re doing the compression test o. Get the engine to operating temperature, make sure the air cleaner tube is disconnected and the choke and thottle are wide open. Remove the plugs( make it easier on the starter) and take the readings "dry" and then "wet"( a couple of ounces of engine oil in the spark plug hole). Record both results and post them.

I followed the leads I got from the forum regarding my low compression and this is what I got for readings starting from the steering wheel and moving forward to wards the radiator. 100. 100, 85, 95 I squirted a bit of oil in each cylinder and i gained about 5 lbs on each cylinder. I then took her out and hooked her up to my wood processor (which requires approx. 23 hp. I sawed and split a cord of 24"and she handled it no problem. My oil pressure gauge read 25 lbs the whole time, so I think I'm ok.

Well, I am famous as a lazy butcher and hack... but did you even start this engine yet? If not, just squirt a little oil in each spark plug hole- let it churn a few times, a little while later, check the compression again. If the rings have been dry a long time, the compression would be bad on a perfect engine. Otherwise, yes, just carboned up valves would cut the compression. I got good results with scotchbrite angle grinder pads. Trouble is- a valve job is half of an in frame rebuild, which isn't hard or expensive... Let us know what the results are with the oil first.

Thanks for the reply tony. Yes, the engine has been run. Starts right up and runs like a top - just doesnt seem to have the power it should for a T30, so that's when i checked compression. I will try the oil in the plug hole trick as well though. Thanks
