I can see them all.
How the heck does that "TEA40" work?

How does it steer? How does it drive? Why doesn't the front fall to the ground? ...etc. ?!

I've seen a number of photos of the "TEA40" over the years but that one is particularly clear.

The two tractors are articulated, you can see the hyraulic steering rams under the rear engine.

But that raises many questions:
* What is that large lever on the rear tractor? Steering brakes?
* The rear tractor steering drop arms "holes" are blanked off, so what is the steering wheelo for?
* How are the engines coupled, via the PTO shaft to the front of the rear crank shaft?
* How are the throttles and gear levers coupled?

Interesting beast indeed!

Ozzie enginuity at it's best. I will bet the parking brake arm and cable, go to the leading one's clutch, so if you change gears while still running, you would lock back the brake lever, walk ahead, change gears, and go back to sitting down in the back half. And I'll bet there is a throttle cable connection on the other side. The pto's don't likely connect, the fifth wheel in the way, and the steering wheel just( power steering column 'gear motor'? from something else?) hooked to pistons steer the front half- probably no brakes up there. I would think in the years someone built that rig, it would have been cheaper to hack up a surplus BREN gun carrier....

Just thought of something! I bet the hydraulic pump of the front half (unemployed?) would run the power steering from the back half's column... atleast that's what I would do!

I don't think that beast is a one off. Over the years I've seen other photos of a "Double Fergy" and assume a number may have been converted.

There are a number of Bren Gun Carriers in the area I live, here is an Aussie built machine parked at our local RSL Club:

They were a failure as a farm tractor: unsuitable gearing; no PTO; the flat head V8 was very thirsty.

Ah ha. The missing pics appear in 'modern view'. The tobacco farms around here don't use machines like that. Altho they could use something like that to hang the leaves in the barn lofts.
