Hi all,Removed the cylinder head on my TEA-20 last week to have it machined and the valve with a bent stem replaced. When I removed the head nuts at either end of the head, the studs came out as well. So my question is, what do I do with the nuts/studs. I'm guess that I need to remove the head nuts by clamping the stud in a vice (or similar) and then threading the studs back into the block. If that's the case, then is hand tightening of the studs O.K or is there a specific tool (vice grips?) that I need to tighten the studs with? Same goes for the manifold studs where several of those came out of the head too. All suggestions much appreciated. Cheers, Jonathan |

| Yes, that was a picture of a stud removal socket. No idea why you can't see the photo, however you will see the tool here:
Here is one for sale on EBay.
Fits on a 1/2" socket driver.
I'm probably excessively pedantic - comes with the age - but when I remove a head or manifold, I always remove the studs, bead blast or clean them, inspect (I've seen head studs that are stretched or almost rusted through) and reinstall with copper based anti seize compount on the thread such as Neva Seize, and a thin film of grease on the stud shaft to delay corrosion. It is important the studs go as far into the block as possible, which you may not achieve when only finger tight.
It is not so critical on the Fergy but the head stud nuts my Jag engine are chrome dome head nuts. It is a common error with Jaguar heads that when the head is ground, the dome head nuts may "bottom out" on the studs, causing the head gasket to leak.
I'm probably excessively pedantic, but I want the knowledge that everything possible has been done, repaired, rectified or inspected when I repair an engine. I find it far cheaper than doing the job twice, when I should have done it correctly the first time!!! There is no such thing as "cheap maintenance"!!!

| It's interesting to hear Bob's perspective on this.
I also have bolts that come out of the block and the head. I have always assumed that as long as you can get them back in OK (and you have enough that remain in to use as guides for the head gasket and the rockers) then it is OK.
Bob, can you tell us more about the stud remover socket? ...and was that a picture of one you tried to post? I cannot see your picture.

| You can double nut the stud to insert them and then remove the nuts. Screw one nut down about half way on the threads and hold that nut with a wrench and tighten another one down to it. Use your wrench on the top nut to tighten the stud some. To remove the nuts hold the bottom nut with one wrench and loosen the top nut with the other wrench. The bottom nut should now come off with just using your fingers. When you torque down the head nuts the studs will also tighten down good. |

| In the future you can also use this double nut method to remove studs also. When removing studs put your wrench on the bottom nut. When installing studs put your wrench on the top nut. Just remember to only thread the nuts on about half way down the threads. If you bottom out the first nut at the end of the threads you will have a hard time loosening it to get it off. |
