At a most inopportune time (30" of snowfall on the ground), the lift arms stopped working while I was plowing. The PTO runs. I topped up the hydraulic fluid which was a little low. Still nothing. I did hear a repeating metallic clinking sound from the tractor body just before I noticed the lift arms were not responding. My first stop is posting this. Now I will search the archives. Thanks for any help you can give a 67 year old farmer's wife. This repair may be beyond my abilities. So far, for 8 years I have put my 1952 TO-20 back to working. |

I've had several TOs that all of sudden lost hydraulics - and - then started making a metallic clinking deep down inside. With all of them, it was broken pump pistons. The broken piston-squares were making the clinking sound due to the PTO shaft running through them. Maybe you'll get off easier?

Grass Roots, one little item I saw that is not correct. The last year for a TO 20 to be made was in 1951, you said yours is a 1952 TO 20.

Pull off the side plate and with the engine running and the pto engaged, look for leaks from the lift cylinder. Look for turbulence around the rear of the pump and noise. If you see that, your relief valve maybe stuck open. Next move the lift lever up and down and watch for the response of the control fork( an "H" shaped assembly hanging nearly verticle). The lower end should move forward when you lift the lever up and rearward when you move the lever down.(UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES STICK YOUR HANDS INTO THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!) If you see that motion but the lift arms don"t move, shut down the engine, reach into the oil and make sure the control fork is on the control valve ateem. It"s "T" shaped and the ends of the "T" fit into the ends of the control fork. If they are connected, try moving the control valve in and out to see if it"s sticky.

In reading your post and looking at the shop manual and looking at the side of the tractor body,I would think that hydraulic fluid would leak out when the side plate is removed. Should I be expecting this to happen? Thanks.

It shouldn"t be filled over the bottom of the bottom most bolt hole on the access plate. Sometimes condensate causes the level to rise.If it is too high, remove that bolt and drain in into a pan.

No it will not leak out unless it is overfilled. It has been mentioned if you don't trust the dipstick you can take out either bottom inspection cover bolt and if the oil just dribbles out that is the proper amount, if it gushes out wait until it slows down to a dribble and put the bottom bolt back in.
