After trying to sort out the oil situation (can't find 15W-30 in the USA, and non-HD 15W-40) I decided to go back with looking for GL-1. Well, the Tractor Supply Company catalog lists a 5 gal and 2 gal container. but, the website doesn't "find" the 5 gal part number. So, off to TSC (one had nothing), and we find out that they're (apparently) closing out the 5 gal container (we got it for $29.99), and the 2 gal container is reduced to $14.99--is this on the way out as well?
So, when GL-1 isn't available anymore, what oil can we use in the USA?

This is the transmission/hydraulic oil I use in my TO-30, it meets the Massey M-11XX and Ford N-series M2C134D specs and it is full synthetic which is excellent for cold weather operation as we have here in Idaho.

CJim:
Thanks for your input (as well as everyone else). It looks like folks use everything under the sun.
The general consenus appears to be 15W-30 would be the best alternative, with 15W-40 (low detergent) being the next best. Some have used SAE30, 10W-30, 10W-40, and, as in your case 15W-40 oil designed for diesels. And I think I understand the reason not wanting a HD oil since there is no filtration the higher detergents tend to "wash" everything down to the sump and into the pump causing more damage.
Of course there (at least at this point) is still the option of GL-1. I figured I'd go with the GL-1 as this point due to my confusion about the engine oil options. Plus, the GL-1 5 gallon bucket at TSC is the best deal $29.99/5 gal ($1.50/quart) compared to even cheap oil at WalMart (over $2.00/quart) or good oil (over $3.00/quart). Even the 2 gal jug at TSC is currently $14.99--that's about $1.88/quart.
I'll still be looking for non-HD 15W-40 in the future (after I've used up my stock of GL-1).
Thanks again to all!

Been following this series of threads as well. I'm going to be doing a repair job on my 3point this winter, so I'm trying to figure out which oil I need to get as well.

For those of you in the more northern climates (I'm in NY), please post what oil your using. Brand & Grade. And where you found it would be nice too.

Thanks.

I live in North Carolina and cant find 15W 30 around here either. I just bought a 1952 TO-30 and was following this subject. I wonder if 10W 40 would be ok to use, also how do you folks feel about using the synthetic oils compared to conventional oils?

I wouldn't use the synthetics just because they are too expensive when you are talking about eight gallons (for TO-35) or six gallons (20/30). You never know when something will happen and you might have to drain it and then you have to be very careful to save it, unless it has water in it, etc., in which case it is lost. In NC you could certainly use straight 30 wt, and that can easily be bought as non detergent and is cheaper than all the other alternatives. It would be a rare day in NC where straight 30 wt. would be too thick, even in the mountains, and it is less likely to leak past axle seals than the multigrades. My 2 cents.

NAPA part number for GL-1 oil is:

65-205 for the 5 gallon bucket and
65-201 for the 1 gallon jug.

Always call ahead, as they may need to get it in from a central wearhouse.

First,I'm guessing Richard thought you meant 1ow30, as i agree that 15w30 is like hens teeth in the U.S. Second, i certainly don't change my hydraulic oil every year. Some do, but i only change mine if it is a new tractor to me or i see obvious signs of water in it, or i have to do maintenance on the system and i have to drain it anyway for the maintenance. Last, i know a number of folks have switched to motor oil, but i still use GL-1 and it works fine for many years, and you can get it at NAPA if TSC quits selling it. Hope that helps.

I find it very hard to imagine you can't find 15 W 30 or 15 W 40 at an auto parts store or TSC or a gas station or as a last resort Wal Mart, I thought that was a regular stocked item as many people use it. That $29.99 is a very good price. If I had to guess what I paid for it earlier this year here I would guess $40-$45. Where do you live that they don't have 15 W 30? Have you tried a local tractor dealership? Richard

Richard:
The only 15W-40 oil I can find at Wal-Mart, auto parts stores, TSC, etc., is for diesels, which a number of folks have said don't use due to them being high detergent oils.
I live in the mid-western USA, and I can't remember seeing 15W-30 anywhere anytime in the distant past. I used to use 10W-40 in my 1965 Dodge (many years ago), but now my mini-van uses 5W-20. The oils just keep getting thinner and thinner.
I think TSC is getting rid of the GL-1. Thus the markdown price. I bought enough for about two more "flushes," although I don't expect the next one to be so bad--do "modern" farmers change their tractor's hydraulic oil every year?
Thanks!

I can't say if the modern farmers do change their oil every year or not. I would guess the more expensive the tractor or equipment the better it gets taken care of at least for the first few years. I know John (UK) always says it should be done at least once a year as the oil does break down. I know you don't want to use oil for diesels. Now I am shocked you can't find regular 15 W 30. Oh well, I learned something else today. Richard
