Hi all,

Just bought my first tractor, a 1952 TO-30. The previous owner did a partial restoration on it. It looks good but still has a few issues to be worked out, one of which is the gas tank has a bad rattle in it. It"s quite annoying when your driving it. The faster you go the louder the rattle. I checked all the bolts and everything is tight. I then tried to see inside the tank but couldn"t see anything so I got a coat hanger and started to probe around to see if something might have fallen into the tank at some point. What I found was what looks to be some kind of a galvanized pan laying in the botton. It looks to be part of the tank...perhaps some kind of a baffle, I don"t really know. The question is...what can I do about it the noise it makes while running? Will I need to replace the tank?Has anyone here ever run into this before? TIA.

The tank baffle was poorly designed and quite often they break and lay down in the tank. There"s not much you can do except cut open the tank and remove the baffle and then weld r braze it closed. Mine"s been like that since I bought it in 1994 and I live with it.

When my baffle breaks it leaks gas. If I had a deal like yours I would stuff some magnets down the tank attached to a wire /chain and see if noise stops. Some of the earth magnets you throw away after use are really strong.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feedback and ideas. At least now I do know that it is a baffle that was supposed to be in there. I'll have to play around with some of those ideas and see what works out best. Thanks again.

Rik

There were (I think two) maybe just one, regardless it is not uncommon for these baffle(s) to come loose and I am sure they can make noise. The only way I know you can fix it is to drain all the liquid out and let it set for a couple days until it is completely dry then with a little luck you may be able to get the baffle standing up like it should be then with something like JB Weld you could use a flat piece of wood and you may be able to get JB Weld (or your choice of product) down onto the baffle and also onto the bottom of the tank. If you can do this I would think that should cure the noise. Please let the forum know how you make out. Of course you could get another tank.
