Well I just got through (Or I thought I was through) with a friends "52 TO30(Clutch R/R,fuel tank cleaning,Carb rebuild,Fuel shut-off R/R, throttle linkage R/R(the hard to reach portion, the little ball stud was broken and froze),everything I had to remove for the work I sandblasted or wire wheeled and re-painted(as this probably will not be the last time I work on this "Lil Grey). I had just finished a trial run to set carb and govenor(all good),turned tractor off,was to bolt on the hood and happened to notice a leak near the front of the tractor,so I thought a re-check of the hose clamps, except everything was tight. Could not find a leak around the obvious(water pump, neck, hoses). Then I slid under the front of the tractor and saw the leak below the crankshaft(not good I thought). Checked oil dipstick and suspicions were confirmed....so I only hope it is just the gasket. I emailed John(UK)looking for tech sheets...I never take much for granted(I"ve done a few head gaskets in my life)...besides I"m also making a little manual of at least what I"ve done to the "Lil Grey"....All comments or advice welcomed. I really enjoy working on these old tractors...It is a welcomed change from the paramedic business |

| | Well coolants leaks are always a bit scary on these Continental blocks. I hope it"s a head gasket. Run a compression check and look for two adjacent cylinders with low presures before you pull the head. If you find that two adjacent cylinders are down, than there"s good possibility that there is a blown head gasket. If you don"t find that pull the pan and look to see if there is fluid dripping from the bottom of the sleeves. There are o-rings at the bottom of the sleeves that sometimes fail and leak coolant directly into the pan. You can"t always tell whether the o-rings are the problem or if the block is cracked and the the coolant only appears to be coming from the o-ring area. So do a very close examination. I"ve never tried this but if you can rotate the engine til the apparent cylinder(s) has both valves closed, and if you can pressurize the cylinder(s) with compressed air, see if fluid is forced out of the bottom at the o-ring or from above the bottom. You may be able to pinpoint the problem before you start tearing it down. |

| Thanks Jerry....John(UK) had also warned me of the o-ring possibility....I'm going to check the compression first as you've stated....but I'm suspecting the o-rings are the problem |
