I've been trying to get my TEA 20 fired up. Haven't had any luck yet.
The block has the number S78109E and the transmission has the number 20 4 0. The trans case was cast on 20 Apr 1950.
I tried to check the timing. Pulled the starter and lined up the hole under the starter to the fly wheel. Surprise, no timing numbers on the the fly wheel. Checked the distibutor for a part number, no plate but the rivets were there. I am going to assume TDC is the correct timing for now. I checked the point gap. Still at .015 where I set them a few days ago. I held the coil output wire close to ground and got a nice spark when I turned the rotor a few degrees. I feel that ignition wise, it should start.
Pulled the valve cover. I wanted to check the valve cover circulation valve. It is only a tube with one fitting screwed into the intake manifold. I cleaned the metal disc with a cotter pin in it and cleaned the carbon out of the manifold. The valves seemed to be very lose. Adjusted them to .010 and .012.
The problem must be in the carb. The automatic choke closing spring is trash and won't hold the choke shut. Can't find a kit that includes that spring. If I hold the choke shut, I can't get any gas to come through the carb. I can't get the engine to even flood and the plugs are not wet. There is fuel in the bowl and runs a nice stream when I open the bowl valve. The problem is probally something really simple, I just don't see it.
I want to get her moved out behind the barn and covered up til spring. Really would like to get her moving under her own power. Hate the thought of pulling her with a Ford.
Thanks for any help.

Think your points are too wide.
Points gap are same as valves 10 - 12.
I have mine set on 11 thou.Time it before tdc [compression stroke]otherwise the explosion is happening on the down stroke not at the top.

Remove the spark plugs and inject a small amount of fuel into each cylinder. Similar to Joans reply you can use ether (Aerostart). Replace plugs and see if it will fire, if so this will eliminate the spark issue, and you can concentrate more on the carb.

You're getting spark at the coil. Are you getting spark at the spark plugs? If not, check the insulation collar on the pivot pin that holds the points.

Have you tried to get it to fire on ether or something similar? if it fires, then it most likely a carb problem. and since you dont get wet plugs with full choke, I would think there is something blocking the fuel passages in your carb.
The choke spring you have to find on an other carb.
I had troubles with the old carb on mine, and ended up buying a brand new one, "Zenith" have started to make them again, so if you cant fix yours, or find a good used one thats the simple fix, worked wonders for me

Griz, I too have a TEA-20 with no marks on the fly wheel. We had a good thread about it a little while ago. You can see it here:

It is now running beautifully.
