| The ring gear on my TO 30 needed a different fix so I took it to a person I really trusted. We thought about three different ways then after looking through the archives we decided the best fix would be to install the ring gear as per manual then he would take it to work and drill 4 holes into the very edge of the flywheel and the edge of the ring gear. After tapping threads in the holes he installed allen head screws and so far I am very happy with the out come. I would do this next time if I had to replace another ring gear on another Fergy. | | There was a design error in the original flywhels. The ring gear was fitted from the back of the flywheel and the starter drive tries to drive it off with every start. Conversion to a 12V electrical system only exacerbates the problem. The fix was a new flywheel design that left a machined ridge at the back of the flywheel and fitted the ring from the front. This design change makes it virtually impossible for the starter drive gear to knock the ring gear off. I had the same problem on my TO-30 and I found a replcement flywheel with the correct design and have had no troubles since. Welding the ring gear on has to be done with the correct method for welding on to white cast iron and very few shade tree mechanics have the know how and the facilities to do it. There are some other fixes and you can search the archives for these. They entail drillingand tapping holes in the flywheel and replicating the factory fix with washers and bolts |

| sounds like it may have dislodged your ringgear out of position. i had a similar problem. when i brought my to30, someone had welded the ringear too the flywheel. the welds broke and off center the ringear. mine would not turn over and the crank would not move easily. remove the flywheel cover and take a look, terry |
