My Dad purchased a new 1950 Ferguson TO-20 in 1950. I purchased the tractor at a local auction. Did the tractor have a battery cover when new? If so are they available? I have found new covers for a Ford 8N but cannot find new battery cover for a Ferguson TO-20.
Thanks

You might check the auto salvage yards for one off an old car. I found one that fit fine. I did have problems with the right rod hitting the gov. rod so you have to watch that. I made one out of 1/8th in. all thread for that side. Don't run with out it. I did and the battery bounced around and smashed the back of the temp. gauge. Best Regards, Jack

Here is what Bob Sybrandy, FENA's Master Technician, says: "The battery hold down cover is Ford # NCA-10718-A. These are still available from Ford/New Holland dealers and after market parts suppliers. I prefer the genuine Ford/New Holland part as it appears to be of heavier construction. The rods are Ford # 8N-10828.

These rods are a bit larger diameter than the original Ferguson parts which usually means you have to initially unbolt the air cleaner in order to connect the right side to the battery tray. I believe these are no longer available from Ford/New Holland but are available from several after market suppliers like Dennis Carpenter, Steiner and Valu-built. They sell for around $6 each."

The battery covers described for the Ford tractor are not equivalent to the original design which had an actual cover over the battery. The part number referenced is for a hold down bracket. Ford did have a battery cover NAA 5162 or 8N 5162 but were of a differnt design than the Ferguson. Salvage is the only option for an original one.

Mr. Fenner,
Are the wing-nut (bolts) holding the battery cover down original also? I have never seen them in that shape. I have a cover, but not the threaded rods or the nuts.
I notice them Big Ol' cables.......gotta be a 6 volter. Mark

Mark,

Confession time. The hold down bolts are not original nor is the battery bracket covering the battery. I have since fixed the hold down bolts to better represent originals. The battery hold down bracket is an after market one I used to fasten the battery cover to as I have never found an original bracket. They usually corroded first I am sure. I do have a picture of an original batt cover and bracket if interested. Not much difference from mine. One other thing missing on the picture I posted and that is a spring clip on the battery cover to snap over the battery bracket. I have since made one to be similar to an original. Yes, the battery cable is a #0 and has a "right hand flag" connector to the battery post which was the original configuration so it would fit properly under the cover.

Battery covers are as scarce as hen's teeth because they were a nuisance as Richard L mentioned and removed or they corroded badly from the old style batteries. So salvage is your only option for an original.

Yes they had covers when shipped from the factory. I do not remember any one mentioning they are available now. I guess when the battery had to have water added or changed that was the end of the cover. There may be a very few turn up at auctions, if anyone knows what they are I imagine they could bring some big bucks.

What about the TO-35? Did they have battery covers in 1955?

According to the parts book the TO 35 6v & 12v gas used just a small 90 degree angled piece of metal with a hole in each end for the hold down rods to go through then wing nuts were used. That part # is 182 532 M1 called a "clamp, battery hold down".

Thanks for the many replies of the battery cover for TO-20. The two pictures were great as I did not know what the cover look like.
Thanks again and you all were very helpful.
