I am finally getting around to installing the hood on my TO30 I have been slowly working on for a couple years and ran into a bit of a problem. This TO30 did not come with a gas tank when I bought it, but I had a spare sitting around and put it in. Now, with the hood on I find that it won’t close all the way! It doesn’t come all they way down to meet the dash and I find that it is the gas cap/filler neck that is the problem. Its to tall! I went out to my TO20 and the filler neck is significantly shorter on its tank. The two tanks look the same in all other ways though. I have posted a picture comparing the two neck heights... The parts book only shows one part number for the gas tank for the TO20,TO30,TE20, TEA20. Does anyone know why there is a difference in these two tanks?

Thanks, Dan

Never Ever Ever cut a hole in the hood. I have a perfect hood that someone cut a hole in it with an axe. I will trade you hoods. When a loader is instaled hood cutting was the result

Don't worry, I wouldn't even consider cutting a hole in my hood. I would buy a new tank before I did that, although from this discussion I don't think I'll have to...

i think the necks are soldered in. a taller one could have been soldered in without looking like it was changed.

I have taken a closer look at the neck and it looks like it is as you say.. There is a small lip of metal that fits inside the neck where it meets the tank and it looks like its soldered in there. Doesn't look to difficult. I would be tempted to try this myself with a torch, but I'm a bit cautious about blowing up.

Try a good radiator shop. They can wash the tank out, take the neck off, cut it down and resolder it. I have had a radiator shop repair several tanks for me.

I think I will have to try that. Hopefully there is a shop in my area that works on gas tanks.

Thanks,
Dan

Can you cut the neck off, trim it shorter, and weld it back on? That would be better than cutting a hole in the hood. More original looking also.

Previous tank owner may had done repair/modification
to have the neck trough the hood if there was a loader which not permit to open the hood for gas filling.

My 2¢

It would have been a really profesional job if they did. No apparent cutting and welding..it looks like it was manufactured this way.

I"m not sure yet what to do about this other than getting a different tank. I don"t want to cut a hole in my hood! New tanks aren"t cheap either...

I think this fergy just doesn't want to leave the garage.

My tea 20 has the filler recessed into the tank.

My only thinking is that the tall one may have been made in the land of almost right.

I don't think so...I got it as spare parts back when I got my TO20 from an 80 year old guy that had a bunch of old fergy parts. It looked like it had been around a long time. If its a repro, its a really old one.
