Hi All,

I need some advice from the experts. On my TO-35, would it be safe to use a newer style trans-hydraulic oil (about 20W, I think) instead of the 80W-90 gear lube that the owners manual talks about? Or should I stick with the older, heavier gear lube?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, I just couldn't find an old post on the subject.

Thanks!

Phill

As others said, you can use motor oil. However, I am disturbed that you refer multiple times to gear oil. The GL-1 mineral oil the manual calls for is not what we normally call gear oil these days. Gear oil as sold for automobiles and trucks has additives not good for your bearings. Gear oil is usually GL-3 or GL-5, etc., and that is NOT what you want. If you use the other suggestions and get motor oil, that's fine, but if not, get GL-1, which is available and works fine. Tractor Supply sells it, but you have to look hard, as most of what they have is gear oil, not mineral oil (GL-1). NAPA also sells it, and NAPA stores that don't carrys it can order it for you.

Your TO-35 takes 8 gallons if you drain it completely, which isn't easy to do. I always just put in 6 or 7 gallons and wait a day before checking and adding any more.

ps,

GL-1 oil is a mineral oil.

I guess any hyd oil would work, but that is not the issue, your oil must service the hyd system and also lube the transmission gears and differential gears. I understand the mineral oil was designed to protect the bearings of the transmission/differental.

GL-1 has been used in my TO-35 since 1957, tractor still runs good and hyd works good. I do change the oil out every 5 years or so. but my tractor stays in the barn and has good rubber boots over trans gearshift levers so outside water should not be a problem.

just my 2 cents!!!

Are you sure the TO35 uses 80W-90 gear oil???

I doubt it - sounds far too heavy to me. Fergys use engine oil in the transmission - as John says, use 15W/30 or 15W/40.

That oil is far too thin for those hydraulics and certainly too thin for the transmission, don't forget that it has to lube the rear axle as well and you do not use these hydraulic oils to do that. As John (Ont) says use 15W/30 or 15W/40 if you can only get that......John

Thanks for the replies, fellows. Getting the 80W-90 gear oil is not a problem. I was just thinking that since newer tractors use the Trans-hydraulic oils for both the transmission and the hydraulics, it might work for my Fergie as well.

Thanks for your help!

Phill

if you experience low winter temperatures, you would be better using 15W/30 oil as it does not get as thick when cold and it does work in all temperatures wheras the original oil GL1 80W or 90W goes like treacle when cold......John

DO NOT use trans-hydraulic oil in your tractor. It contains sulphur ingredients that will destroy the yellow metal parts in the transmission and rear end. To use a lighter oil use a multi-grade 10W-30w or 15W-40W motor oil. There are several posts in the archives re this.
