I just bought this TO-30 and it has a long lever that goes into the left side pto cover. I saw one of those on a tractor at the FENA convention at Mount Pleasant Ia. I must be having a senior moment but I can't remember just how that is supposed to work or what its for. I know one of the FENA guys will know.
This one came loaded up pretty good with a Sherman combo, optional spinout rear rims. and an optional original Ferguson tachometer, plus the pto gizmo. I'm thinking all those would be pretty hard to find together.
Thanks.

Irv, does that engage the Sherman? It looks like there is a pto lever just behind it in your picture.

Oh, and I forgot, it has brackets on the inside of the left fender that holds the drawbar when its not being used. I've never seen those before.

Yes that is the PTO lever and appears to work as normal. The long lever pushes forward and it feel like there is spring tension agaist it and has a stop but we couldn't get it to do anything different on the PTO. There appears to be an adjusting screw on the opposite cover, for a band adjustment, maybe??

You need to tear all that junk out of there and send it to me. I will give you twenty dollars plus shipping cost. Especially as the PTO is not different in operation...

Note the extra long lever coming out of the left side pto shifter cover on this 8N.
This is the extremely rare Sherman live pto conversion for the 8N. The lever operates
a manual clutch pack between the transmission and the rear end pinion gear. This allowed
the tractor operator to start up normally with the pto engaged and then use the long lever
to disengage the tractor drive and stop the tractor without stopping the pto. If you use the
lever for stopping and starting and left the regular foot clutch alone you had a "live" pto.

Oops! I let the cat out of the bag! My Bad.

Bruce,
How about 22.50 for the gizmo. $20.00 seems a little low. LOL
Thanks for the info on the live pto. I thought it was something on that order but I had it figured backward, and that didn't make sense. I couldn't get to the sight you listed. It kept sending me to a sight to sell you parts. I've been to the Smiths Sherman transmission sight, but didn't find the lever.

Thanks, its the one I've been looking for a long time. I just wanted a TO-30 with an overdrive, and all the rest was a bonus. It needs a lot off prettying up but that will come.
I also got an original operators manual and a parts book for it and another for a TO-35.

Irv,
I have that on my TO30 and it is indeed a lever to incorporate live PTO. I use it when bush hogging and it works great. I think I have some technical information that I obtained from Bob Sybrandy (former MF dealer, now lives in Lansing, MI). Send me your contact info and/or address and I will try to find it and send you a copy. Have you tried to see if it works? I have a friend who knows how to adjust it. Let me know if I can be of help.

Okay, After considering it I guess $22.50 is a decent price. Shoot me an E-mail and I will give you the shipping address and get a payment out to you either Pay Pal or Postal money order. Your choice.
You can try the smith site again and look under the "Original Accesories" tag.

I"m waiting.....

Bruce,
I found the Smith original accessories tab you refered to, and mine looks just like it. It sounds like I might have hit the jackpot on this one for rarity. As I mentioned before I've only seen one other one on a Ferguson.
I tried mine out to see if it would release but it doesn't. Like I said before, there is an adjuster screw on the opposite side cover that probably adjusts the clutch pack. I going to try to find more info on the mechanics of it, before I try messing with it. Thanks for the info and just keep waiting...........LOL

Brent,
Yes, I tried mine out but it won't release. Any information you have on that would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is open.
I see Bob Sybrandy has written an article in the Ferguson Furrows I got yesterday, but I haven't gotten a chance to read it all yet.

Thanks agnin

Sorry Richard, but this one's a keeper. It's gonna have to wait a while for the redo. I find after driving it a bit that the clutch is slipping but I think the oil is coming from the steering sector. The tractor was last driven a couple years ago and I think they must have filled it up to sell it and its running out the seals and down and out the weep hole in the bell housing. So it could be that its getting on the clutch, also.

Check the transmission oil; if it looks creamy, it has water in it. That is why it is overfull.
Drain and re-fill promptly; then work the tractor for several hours, even if you have to go for a drive down the road.
Good luck with your find.

Brian,
The trans is fine, the oil is clear and not overfull. I drove it 30 miles home the day I bought it. The steering sector is what was filled up and its been leaking a long time. I scraped about 3 pounds of grease and caked dirt off of it. I bought the steering arm seals but want to take the sector off and seal up the bottom cover before I put them in.
