now that the engine is off the to-35 how much of a project is it to replace the pto seal???

I will assume from your message that you are refering to the PTO input shaft at the front of the transmission. I would defintely change both of the input shaft seals at this time. It is really not very difficult to do. I have three TO-35s and have done each of them. As a matter of fact, I have removed the input shafts from the transmission and then used them to align the clutches as I install them on the engine. Then I replace both of the seals in the input shaft assembly and then reassemble the input shaft. In order to remove the input shaft assembly you first must remove the cover from the countershaft and pull the shaft forward and down. There is a threaded hole at the front of the shaft I think it is a 7/16 fine thread. Thread a bolt in the hole and pull forward. This drops the shaft out of the way so that the input shaft assembly can be removed. It should take about 20-30 minutes for removal and the same for installation. It is certainly worth the trouble to do the job now rather than having to split the tractor later when it leaks.

By your statement, it almost seemed the engine was removed to replace the seal :) but really it is very easy to replace PTO seal. Remove the four retaining bolts and pull the shaft slightly, if it is too hard insert a long slim punch in the hole at rear of shaft and pry to pull shaft. Be careful at this point as I was told that if you pull too far you may have major problems trying to slide shaft back in the grooves. You need only about 3 inches of the shaft pulled to install seal and reassemble. I guess this means also you have to drain the transmission so oil does'nt pour on the floor (6 gals).
