A true Case/IH.

Been fixing up a few things on my 340 utility lately. This unit has the shuttle shift feature. The lever that was one it was cobbled up pretty bad and really sloppy. I fixed it by using a hydraulic lever from a Case 400 that I had laying around. The only difference being that when the lever is pushed forward the tractor is in reverse, and when it is pulled back the tractor is in the forward gear.

I also made a bucket gauge to tell me when the bucket is level. I made it out of scrap parts that I found in my scrap pile. It looks rough, but it serves it's purpose.

Ifure,

That;s a good idea for the bucket.

I have never made one. Is it important to have the level indicator pivot near the bucket pivot point?

I am of the cut that appreciates any improvement that will provide further utility.

Mine ended up near where the bucket cylinder pin is. I also made a pivot for the pipe so it could pivot while the rod is run through it when I tip the bucket. Most of these that I've seen are made to be adjustable. I put this one together with the rod extra long. The I made sure the bucket was level where I wanted it, the cut the rod off flush with the pipe. When the rod is flush with the end of the pipe I know the bucket is level with the ground. It gives me a starting point when I need to tip the bucket forward to dig into the ground.

Yep, that's exactly how improvements are invented. I sawed off the rod in my depth-gage tube at the level, to where with the bucket lowered down to ground level, the rod is even with the end of the tube when the bucket is exctly parallel level with the ground. Handiest thing ever.

I'd think that F/R lever would be kind of hard getting used to - opposite to instinct! It could also be sort of a safety issue in a panic situation or could surprise a new driver that didn't know or remember what you've done.

That's a good point. I could become used to it, but would advise others to use the reverse gear on the transmission instead of the shuttle shift. Now you really have given me another thing to worry about.

The "move foreward to go in reverse" is kinda like the shifter lever on the older IH tractors. You move it foreward to go in reverse. I have a JD 430 I drive a lot, reverse is to the lower left on it.

Come to think about it, that's the way the gear shifter is on this tractor. Reverse is forward and first gear is back. Maybe it won't be so bad after all.
