Cleaning Commutator

In my manual it says to polish gen comm with a 00 piece of sandpaper. While the armature slowly revolves. Would I do this by turning the fan belt or at low idle? 00=100grit?

The only time I've EVER cleaned a generator commutator is with it completely disassembled.

I see NO reason to embed grit in the carbon brushes.

The official service manual suggests it, though!

An "00" sandpaper is "very fine" in the old system of grading sandpaper grits, just the OPPOSITE of "100 grit" in the more modern grading system.
Official Manual

Just about any automotive electrical reference manual states "never use emery cloth on commutators".

I'm not sure why, probably because emery cloth grit it at least somewhat conductive.

I have done this on a few tractors that were not charging. just held a piece against the commutator with tractor running and then it started to charge.
it is normally done when overhauling a generator on the bench.

Thanks for the info. System not charging. Just put in new wiring, batt, and belts. Was overdue.

Bob is right emery has metallic particles in it. They make small stones similar to a whetstone to polish armatures. We had large ones to polish the armatures on steam turbine generators.

We used to get a roll of commutator paper but they quit making it available. I just use emery cloth. Have for years. Also, we used to have a stone on a handle for polishing the commutator while generator was running. If the brush's arc you know it is not polished correctly. Also, my spell check shows me as spelling commutator wrong but the dictionary says it is correct.
