Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew if a Farmall H distributor can be replaced with a Magneto. I haven't ever had a distributor off, but the connections look exactly the same. Thanks for the help.
 
Yes, a battery ignition unit (commonly called a distributor) can be replaced with a magneto. One problem may develop as the gear in the adaptor housing has to be timed properly with a magneto but a battery ignition unit has reduction gear in unit that you can time the distributor properly.
 
if replacing a dist. with mag. DO NOT hook wire from switch to mag. mags use a grounding switch and burn out the coil if hooked to battery source thru existing switch wiring.
 
That may be true of the early Hs, Rusty, but of the 9 or 10 Hs that I have owned over the years, only one was ever equipped with a magneto. --Lee

The battery ignition distributor was part of an IH sponsered, dealer installed, performance upgrade. Seems like nearly ALL Hs recieved it. I think the Super H was the first to come from the factory with the distributor, but the magneto was still available as an option right up through the 350 and 450.
 
If the only problem is timing the new magneto I think I can manage, I just wasn't sure if the wiring needed to be changed or not. How do I wire the new kill switch?
 
Are you getting a different switch. You need a grounding switch. That would be a single wire switch that grounds the mag when switch is in (off). Of course you can use your battery ign switch if you like. Just unhook the wire coming from the amp meter. Then run a wire from that switch terminal to ground. The switch will work backwards so you will have to push switch in to run and pull out to ground out mag to shut off. Kind of unhandy especially if someone other than you run the tractor.
