B Head Gasket Replacement Question

I have a manifold on a B that has seen better days and needs to be replaced--it seems pretty straightforward on replacing that. What I was wondering is how much work and effort does it take to replace the head gasket? I have really never worked much on engines, so better check to see if its a major undertaking. Thank you!

Why you you want to replace it?

If it is seeping a bit at the edges, first try a warm re-torque.

Check the valve settings after that.

If you need to replace it, the mating surfaces have to be cleaned up perfectly clean, as well as the bolts, threads, and boltholes.

It then needs to be torqued to "spec", in the specified order, and the valves need to be set before startup, followed by a warm re-torque and a re-checking of the valve settings.

Well to replace the head gasket you have to drain the cooling system. Also very likely to have to do an oil change since your likely to get coolant in the oil even with the cooling system drained. Then you have to pull the valve cover off to get to the head bolts. Remove the bolts then clean up the head and block. Also have to remove the rocker arm assembly and the push rods. Good idea to stick the push rods in carb board so they go back where that came out of. Then you do the reverse of those thing and torque the head down to spec so you need a torque wrench and then adjust the valves since that will change due to the new head gasket. Best to have the I-T manual IH-8 before you even get started

You dont need to replace the headgasket to replace the manifold gaskets the manifold comes off without removing the head.

It is work but remember if it's already broke you can't make it worse , however if it ain't broke don't fix it.
