Generator Assist Please

Good Morning,
I picked up a 12V Generator to change my 52
H. It is the last 6V tractor I have left. The
generator is a GENEX off of a M being scrapped
out. I have got it installed with new
regulator and polarized for 12V pos ground.
There is a ground screw located on top of
generator. Is this required to be grounded for
the genny to work? Thanks for any guidance.

If the generator is securely mounted, and the mating surfaces relatively clean AND the regulator is grounded (not bolted to rust or paint)a separate ground wire isn't normally necessary.

Bu, on the other hand, a ground wire between the generator and the regulator certainly isn't a BAD thing.

Not needed if the Gen mounting brackets and adjuster strut are unpainted where they bolt to the engine and bolt to the gen. There must be a metal to metal path for the ground circuit to the engine block. If it is not a delco, make sure the regulator is designed for the application. Smoke can indicate lack of function. It was quite common in automotive use to use the ground wire. With the voltage regulator mounted on the inner fender or the firewall the ground wire running from the generator to the voltage regulator insured better service than relying on the fender having a good ground.

Do not ever use frames, brackets, bolts, or nuts,or sheet metal for ground or return paths on generator or alternators. Always use a green wire to do the job. Also terninate those connections to the componets directly especially the regulator, make sure it terminates on the metal base and not to the screws that hold it to the frame as those are usually insulated from ground. Well there are a tremendous number of Original equipment vehicles and generator/alternators set up (successfully) to use the mounts and brackets for chassis ground. An additional ground will not hurt, but in general does nothing. Jim

Pulled the 12V generator back off tractor and tested using external DC to see if it would act as a motor. After pulling apart and sanding armature along with cleaning, it now works using above test method. Hope to get it installed this afternoon and see if all is well. Researching this Delco # 10240 shows this began life on a Oliver in the late 50's. Slight modification of original mounting bracket made it easy to align and a 31" belt fit perfect. This was much cheaper than using a MD generator that I had used in converting my SM. I have had no problem whatsoever using the mounting brackets as the ground point on generators. Thanks for all...
