Anti freeze coming out of water pump gease zerk

Have a water pump on my M that was leaking anti freeze out of the front of the water pump.
Removed pump and dug out what was left of old packing, installed new packing and put some grease in the zerks. Now have anti freeze coming out of the bottom grease zerk. Never leaked from this zerk before. Tightened packing nut a bit and put a little more grease in it and it seems a bit better. What would cause this to happen ?

Thanks in advance,

Did you put in new zerks? Were they standard zerks? There are special zerks with a screw-on cap to prevent leaking from the water pump.

The channel for the grease goes from the zerk to the bushing the pump impeller rides on. The packing is farther forward on the shaft so grease is the only thing stopping the coolant from coming out. That is why that zerk has a cap on it.

Ok,

That explains it. The zerk was covered in a thick coat of paint and hadn't been used in years. Scraped it clean and greased it, now it leaks. I will look for a cap or replace it.

Thanks

That will teach you the grease things :) I don't even own an M and I learned things today!
