Hello there, I have heard alot about the 706 diesel being a very hard starting engine by nature, i have a 1964 706 Diesel which has the original D282 diesel (not German 310) I saw a post from someone else the other day that pertained to being timed property, do any of you know about setting the injection timing on th e pump? Is this something that can be adjusted? It has a new injection pump on it, the engine was overhauled less than 50 hours ago and it has new glow plugs so I'm just wondering is thus an issue that is just in its nature to be hard starting or are there adjustments that can be made to improve this.

Nature of the beast, I'd leave it alone. If you want to feel better about how it starts, get a 705 Moline. At least you have glow plugs for help. On a 705, you're on your own. JD had pony motors, Farmalls had start on gas, run on Diesel. Case let you start a small fire in the intake manifold. Everybody (except Moline)tried to make it easier. Moline said to heck with it, you're own your own.

Curt, our diesel instructor had a Super 88 D, Oliver engine in his car,he would go out ice fishing, had some kinda 12v heating coil's wrapped around the intake manifold, He said it always stated. I have no reason to disbelieve him.

With a fresh overhaul, I would be wondering what the valve recession on the cylinder head was set at. If it is not kept to the minimum of the specifications they will be harder to start.

A 706 with a D-282 should pop right off after holding the glow plugs for about a minute in cool weather. Keep holding them when cranking and also open the throttle. Hold them for a while after starting to if exhaust is not clear. Any diesel has to have a good fast cranking speed to start. The timing is easily checked and should be 1 degree before TDC. You can go up to 3 degrees before tdc if it spits and sputter a bit at higher engine speeds. If the valves are recessed below new specs you will have a problem starting and cleaning up exhaust after it starts. Compression is everything .

Real cold blooded motor is a 7.3L at factory timing and pump settings....darn near need the block heater in 50 degree weather....a couple minor adjustments and the ole mare will start near zero.

30 secs for warm weather'
60 secs for cool weather.
90 secs for cold weather.
Hold button in while you push start button, and hold button in until exhaust clears up.
