H Starter SLAMS Into Place

Many years ago I put 12V on my H, and the old starter starts just fine, but it really SLAMS into place. I worried about how severe the the slam is. It seems like somebody said a few weeks ago a different starter drive or Bendix or something would make it better. Could you tell me exactly what? Thanks. Don't know nothing about electrical. Got the old 6V starter, the Delco 10SI alternator, 12V batttery, excellent cables, etc. THanks guys.

The only drives I know about are the conventional "Bendix" style with the spring, and a newer "clutch" type. Neither is specifically for "slamming."

I don't know what all the hand-wringing is about, though. You WANT the starter to engage positively when you hit the button.

All your wear and problems come from the starter not engaging completely, as in when it was on 6V.

As long as it is working properly, leave it alone.

When I converted my H to 12 volts in about '88 I left the starter 6 volts and it would do as you say,,,SLAM into the flywheel, but it sure would start good!!! Everyone said leave it alone, it will not hurt anything. A few years later, on occasion, the starter would Lock into the flywheel but I could unlock it by loosening the starter or putting the tractor in gear and rocking it. After about a year of that aggravation I pulled the starter and discovered that the flywheel teeth in ONE spot had been severely chipped from I suppose the starter slamming into it. I had the starter rebuilt to 12 volts and dressed up the flywheel teeth a bit and haven't had a problem since. Thank God I didn't have to replace the flywheel. Now you MAY get away with a 6 volt starter and you may not,,,, Wanna take a chance?????
