Case IH 885 fuel problem

My FIL has an 885 deisel like I said in the subject line. The tractor has 2 fuel tanks. The left side is where you put the fuel in and then it flows to the right tank as you fill the left. The problem is the right side will run out of fuel with 6 to 8 inches of fuel still in the left side. The fuel transfers when you fill up the left side but when it starts getting low it stops. Can anyone help me figure out what the problem could be.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Terry, in addition to Pete's advice, the usual problem is junk in the bottom of the tank blocking the outlet. You can blow the lines back into the tank with compressed air but that will be a temporary fix. Only fix is to drain both tanks and remove outlet out of the bottom, flush tank and blow dirt out of lines and outlet valve.

It's funny that it will run out of fuel with quite a bit left in the left tank. Why or how could it move fuel over after more is added?

The tank is joined with a passage between them but it is quite a long way from the bottom, like half way up the tank. That easily allows flow between the two sides of the tank until fuel gets below that common passage in tank then the small line on the bottom equalizes them.

There is only one tank, but it's a saddle config.

There is a cross over hose between both halves of the tank. It screws right on the bottom. I am betting it is plugged on one end, you can unscrew both ends and see if fuel comes out, then check to see the cross over hose is not plugged.

The entire job should take less than 10 minutes.

I think we might be missing some pieces to the puzzle. Some models do have two separate tanks but I have never seen that. I believe it is for tractors with deluxe cab. Not sure. All the ones I have seen or worked on (similar models, not exact one) have one tank, mounted between the fenders. It has a large cross over section between each side well up off the bottom of the tanks, and a small cross over pipe on the bottom connecting the tanks. Most refer to them as left and right tanks but actually all in one. Never saw one with a hose connecting the tanks at the bottom, always a pipe.
