New guy here - Farmall 706 Diesel

Hello everyone, I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself, My name is Sean, i am a diesel mechanic by profession. We have a small 11 acres farm in western illinois and we run a Horse Rehabilitation for abused and neglected horses.

I have recently aquired a farmall tractor and had a few questions about it. It is a Farmall 706 Diesel w/ narrow front. I ran the serial number and found it to be a 1964. I was told it had a complete engine overhaul 10-15 years ago and has had very little use since then, less than 50 hours on rebuild, they said the injection pump was replaced in 2014 when they got it going to use, after they inherited it. It has a loader on it that works fine but I was told the loader is actually for a 460 model so my first question would be what would be the correct loader for this model tractor as I would be interested in removing this one and installing the correct loader.

My next question pertains to the narrow front end. My preference would be to have a wide front and I'm wondering how hard it would be to convert it if I was able to find donor parts from another farmall 706, would this be a pretty straight forward bolt up type deal or would I be looking at alot of fabrication/modifications?

I am eventually wanting to start baling my own hay and would I be correct in assuming a wide front tractor would be better suited than the narrow row crop front?

A model 2000 loader would be period correct for a
'64 vintage 706. But a model 2350 is newer,
stronger, and should bolt right on and rebuild parts
for the cylinders are still stocked. Much better
chance of finding one that hasn't been glued
together with ugly welds than a 2000.

Swap from nfe to wfe from a donor 706 is just nuts
and bolts. Make sure the wfe axle is not all torn up
and welded. Far as which axle would work better for
baling, depends on what type of baler. Small square
baler for horse hay, the nfe would be fine. For
rolling big round bales a wfe would be needed.

Back when 706's were new there were LOTS of them
around, mostly gas powered too. All nfe because they
had mounted cultivators and corn pickers on them.
I'd leave the nfe on it if it was mine.

I'm guessin we're gonna need some pictures of it!

Here's mine no pic with the loader on it yet

I like the wide front for my square baler but you run over the rows some.

There is no "correct" loader for your
tractor.Anyone of many will fit both tractors and
is perfectly acceptable. As was said a 2000 is
'period correct',but anyloader that fits is OK.If
it is a brand other than IH,It doesnt
matter.Second, the narrow is just fine for baleing and
general farmwork. The only time you really NEED a
wide is when you need to straddle something. Like
a windrow while round baleing or turning windrows.
As far as being "more stable,That is a wives tale.
Thirdly,Buy/order books.Owners and service
manuals.They are going to be the4 cheapest,most
useful thing you will ever buy for your new
tractor. Happy tractoring! Steve

Thank you all for your help, where might be a good place to look to get one of those loaders, i would like to replace it with a larger one as the one that's on it looks kind of goofy since it's for a smaller model, how do I post pictures here? I would like too upload a couple pictures of my new toy for yall to see

Love your "over the steering wheel" throttle! Where did you get
it? I'd love one for my 706.
Thanks, True Son

Here is my 706. I have a Westerndorf TA28 loader, I bought both the tractor and loader off the classified ads on this website. Wide front will be much better for loader work when its muddy, that narrow front likes to push mud and not turn.

If I wanted to actually pursue swapping this tractor over to a wide front where would be my best bet to find parts to do so? Is there a specific part number axle I need? Certain models I could use as a donor or only another 706? I know you said it would be pretty much a bolt up job but are the steering differance between nfe and wfe alot differant or very similar, thank you.

The best place to find it is, wherever you can find it.

Unfortunately there is no one place we can tell you to look, especially for the loader.

Most likely you're going to find the loader at an auction or in a private advertisement. Sometimes you'll find a front end there too, but more often you'll find those at a "used tractor parts," aka salvage yard.

How far you're willing to travel for this will determine where you look. You can always find what you need if you're willing to drive any distance and pay any price.

As mkirsch said auctions ads hard to say where. I found my loader on craigslist. Ebay might be an option for loader and front end. there surely some farmall people around where you live.

(reply to post at 05:45:43 03/09/15) How much loader work will you do on 11 acres. The loader you have is fine. Price out a new heavy duty Schwartz after market front end. I think they are better than the IHC fronts.

I see listed under, photo adds, on this site, a 706 being parted out in Wi. Doesn't say wf or nf though. May be worth a call depending on where you are.
good luck and welcome aboard
Dennis

I'll lok into that, thank you, do any of you know anywhere online where I could find a pdf type version of the service and operators manuals or is my old option to buy the paper copy
