340 ih revs to high

340 row crop idles fine when I move the throttle seems like it goes way to high. It seems like it doesn't have a mid range. I turned the screw in top of governor all the way in. Didn't help much. What's wrong, just bought it and got it running. Any diagrams or pictures of linkages under dash and gas tank would be great.

Does the tach not work? I think the governor is your problem.Something inside of it may have 'failed'.Order a service manual and adjust everything to the book.

Like Gene says, your governor needs attention. About the only thing you can do external of the governor is check the linkage adjustment between the governor and the carburetor. But, for the problem you describe, it's not likely to make any difference.
The governor operation is very simple. When you advance the throttle lever you pull on a spring to open up the carburetor. The governor has spinning weights that through centrifugal force counter act on the spring tension. The point at which the opposing forces equalize determines the engine RPM.
When you disassemble the governor, the problem will probably be obvious.

I believe that governor is made the same as the larger tractors and on most of them the drive gear is not keyed to shaft so it can and does work loose sometimes and therefore you have no governor control except to idle it down .

Your gas 340 would have a governor like a 140 or 240 It should run about 2000 rpm but should be ok slightly higher . You will want to remove the radiator to get it out easier I think you will find a broken spring , but I suggest checking and replacing bushings while you are in it as they will make a lot of difference in how the governor works if they are worn out.

I took apart today. Found the plastic bushing on the shaft that the weights push is stuck to the shaft. Also the 4 prong deal that pushes on the plastic bushing from the front is loose on the shaft. Bushings are loose to and shaft is rusted by the gear. Would it be cheaper to by a rebuilt one?

Check Messicks for online parts, I would guess around $100 or so to re bush and new thrust bearing, spring, etc.

also check your pins that hold weights on they can become loose and effect response time.
