I just got a 706 in need of a mcv pump I believe due to lack of steering and inability to get it to prime. The price was right though so I'm not to worried about that what I am worried about is a noise that started shortly after I got it while trying to prime the mcv. It's what to me is a trans knock sounds like its right under the clutch pedal and I only hear it in neutral, engine speed does not affect it much it's just a slow steady knock. To me it's rather loud and it's only with the clutch out push in the clutch and it stops. I know very little about this tractor and have ordered a manual but thought in the meantime I would run it buy you guys and see what you think. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

WHY would a clutch release bearing make noise with the pedal UP/"out"?

Only reason would be if a mis-adjusted release finger is whacking the TO bearing with it in the "engaged" position.

So if that's the case would it be possible to fix without splitting the tractor?

Pull the inspection cover off the bottom and look and if you have to unhook the pedal linkage and trans brake linkage so you can move it farther away to spin it by hand and see it better. And yes you have to split it if thats the problem.

You are talking about a clunk with clutch engaged. At that point the throw out bearing should not be touching or turning unless you have no free play on clutch. You also say the noise sounds like near the clutch pedal. That would be rear of speed transmission or range transmission. I would make sure you have free travel on clutch pedal. Then put speed transmission lever between 2nd and 3rd gear which will be a neutral. No detent there so you have to feel your way. This will stop all speed transmission top shaft gear movement and mesh with lower gears while stopping all turning of range transmission. This should help you pin point area of noise.

Well Pete I took your advice and now I cant reproduce the noise no matter where the trans or clutch is. Im going to get this mcv pump and valve done and hopefully get the thing useable and then we will see what happens.

Noise came back today while trying to figure out something on my steering same as last time. I tried putting it in neutral in both sides of trans and noise stayed steady push the clutch in or put in gear and let clutch out and it stops.
