International 684

I have a 584 and an 884. I'm pleased with both tractors. One thing to look for is the parking brake--if worn down to the adjustable limit, it's major surgery to replace it!

Good old tractors. Can be very cold blooded. Make sure you have a good block heater. Quick on the road as well. Sam

Hi Dave, my brother has a 684 with TA with over 10,000 Hrs on it. Problems he has had has been one clutch job, parking brake destroyed by hired help and same with TA destroyed by using it as a down shifting going down hills. Still runs great and uses no oil. He had a TA eliminator kit installed about 5 years ago.
As some one else mentioned the d-239 is a hard starter when cold (below freezing). Works great with a tank heater.

From the photos it looks pretty good, bar axles and front weight bracket plus flat tops and big rubber.

I'd go look at it and see what it drives like. Should be a good tractor.

Good robust machines, still relatively modern, pleasurable to drive, and most wearable parts still available. As others mentioned, diesels in that family are cold-blooded -- not just below freezing but below about 50 degrees F (but otherwise fairly bulletproof). You will want to make sure the ether start solenoid works! Check everything hydraulic, in particular the steering and brakes and PTO clutch. Likely the parking brake will be worn out, somewhat likely the lube pump that moves fluid between the transmission compartments will be weak (and the warning light will be burned out or disconnected). If it has the original wiring harness some of the things on the dash will likely be nonfunctional (but harnesses are available and rewiring can be done in a couple of hours).

(quoted from post at 17:33:53 02/23/15) What are the pros and cons of an International 684
IH 684

i used to cut and rake hay with a 684 good running tractor never had any problems with it. we pulled the bailer with a 7600 ford, we cut all over east texas with it.

what i liked about the 684 was the way the controls were laid out

That basic tractor was manufactured from 1973 until 1997, with different model numbers and updated hoods every few years. You can't really find much fault with a tractor that stayed in production for 25 years.

IH switched the shifting on the 684 from a sawtooth straight pattern to a double-H pattern during production, which was a vast improvement IMHO.
