Correct 'white' paint for Farmall 230

Does anyone have the CORRECT paint code for the hood and grill on a 230? Dealer gave us IH935 (991115N new #). We tried to match it with DuPont but the color they crossed to was almost pure white. The paint under the emblems (we think the original paint) was a cream color that looked similar to the 935. We need urethane paint either Nason or PPG.

The original white was Harvester White 223. I don't know what that crosses to in current paint. The hood side sheets were originally decals, not paint. So if you are looking at paint behind the hood emblems . . .

OK, learned something new today, I didn't know the sides were a decal. We assumed the emblems were never off, but it was definitely paint that I blasted off.

Was the original color a white or cream like the 935?

Short question, even an inadequate answer is long.

First off, way back there was a "Harvester Cream" color (290-D) that was definitely a cream color, very far from white. In late '56, it was replaced with 233 white. Over the years, there have been several changes to the white. None of them were close to the white you find on a refrigerator. They were more towards cream, maybe a little greenish, yellowish etc. With time they all seemed to fade towards each other. A rattle can of Krylon antique white seems to me a lot closer to all of them that some of what I have seen used in restorations.

Not sure this helps answer your original question.

I cannot answer this with any authority but I spent a couple of hours reviewing the IH Paint Committee Decisions relative to paint changes from the Farmall 200 to the 240. I didn't see anything specific to the 230 but I scanned through them fairly quickly by titles. I did find as Jim Becker noted that Decision I37 dated 9/6/56 changed the white from Implement Cream No. 292-A to Harvester White 233. It also noted the Farmall 200 white front grille would be changed to 233 also. This change in color was to take place as soon as possible. The next change I found was when the Farmall 240 and other tractors or that era were being implemented that the side panels and grille white would be Harvester White 901 by Decision 278 dated 4/18/58.
Somewhere between Sept. 1956 and April 1958 the color was changed from 233 to Harvester White 901 but I never found when and by what authority. When I restored my 1958 Farmall 240 and a 1958 No. 11 Side Delivery Rake I used Harvester White 901 which crosses to PPG 8665 since that was the color established by the Paint Committee for both items. The No. 11 hay rake colors were established by Decision No. 125 dated March 13, 1957 so Harvester White was an established and previously approved white by that date.
Harvester White 901 to my eyes appears to be a white with the slightest of green tint and is certainly different then the creamer whites seen on the later tractors starting sometime in the 1960's. I've seen that creamer white used on numerous tractors that according to the Paint and Identification Committee should have been the whiter white like 901. I believe the current white available from the CaseIH dealerships which is 935 white is certainly a cream color and not even close to Harvester White 901.
I can't remember the shade of 233 white relative to 901 from my youth as it's been far to long ago and most likely I had my eyes on something else. Hope this helps but it is your tractor and what suits you is most likely the correct color for you. I have no color cross information to the 233 which it might have been but do know what 901 is like. Since the Farmall 230 was produced during 1956, 1957 and 1958 it could have been different colors as all three of the noted whites or the early cream were in play during it's production, Hal.

Hal,
Your post prompted me to take another look at the whites. You almost had the answer on 233 vs. 901 when you looked at I37. There were supplements issued for I37. Supplement 2 (Feb 8, 1960) addresses the white number change. The way it states things, it sounds like the color numbering system changed but the color was the same.

By the way, the original I37 was dated 9/7/56. The last 200 was built in September and the first 230 in November. There should have been plenty of time to get a 233 white paint tank in place before 230 production began.

Here is the supplement from the McCormick Collection at WHS:

Jim thanks for getting back into this and I did see the supplement but the way it read it pertained only to farm implements as it was only addressed to the farm implement works. I didn't know it could of possibly affected the tractor production facilities also. This is far past the date of when the 230 and most of the 240's were being produced I believe. Thanks again for some clarification and if I have something wrong please advise as this is a learning exercise as well for a lot of us, Hal.

Tim, The Product Identification Committee Decision No. I37 dated Sept. 7, 1956, clearly states that on the side of the hood of all Farmall and International tractor models in production at that time a Harvester White decal was to be applied under the hood name plates. I am sure the use of the decal was to eliminate the need for masking and painting two different colors on a single piece of sheet metal. At the bottom of page 2 of this decision there is a paragraph which states "The McCormick and McCormick International name plates are to have a Harvester White background instead of Harvester Red".
We are just trying to assist the OP with what the original paint colors and scheme would have been on an original 230 tractor. It is possible you may have seen a restored tractor that someone painted the background since the original Harvester White decals were no longer available anywhere and paint was used to provide the color for the nameplate background. These originals of the decisions archived at the Wisconsin Historical Society are of a great benefit in documenting the actions of this committee more then a half a century earlier, Hal.

Yes, the date on Supplement 2 was after 230 production ended. But I think it clarifies that the numbering system changed for the entire Farm Equipment Division. It doesn't say it in so many words, but it seems to imply that the color itself remained the same.

Anyone questioning whether the white on the hood sheet was paint or a decal can verify it by taking a look in the 230 parts catalog. Look at the decal packages for parts 2 750 013 R1 and 2 750 014 R1.

hello, you may be correct.i have a 230 and repainted it.the side of the hood cream paint ...looked like it was painted on and sand blasted just like paint....but your probably correct. the paint code I gave for the ppg paint, yuma cream is the color for the 230.international used it and its an exact match what was on my 230.thanks..
