What is this (pic)

Scrapping out a super m and this was on the hydraulic control valve. My guess is flow divider. I'd like to know how to hook it up and use it some day on a power steering unit if it is what I think it is.

Pretty sure its a pressure relief valve. Set it for pressure desired and when it goes above that the outlet with L fitting is plumbed to dump into reservoir.
Did the tractor in question before end up being a SM?

It's a smta. Z castings, correct tin but no ta. That valve in the picture came from another tractor I bought from the same guy.

Some M&W hydraulic kits used that type pressure relief.
Just curious, did the tractor come without a T/A or just had parts removed? Did the serial number end up being 5 numbers?

There's 3 numbers: 744. Then C,L,P. I don't know if the center section was a replacement from a 400 or what, but the plugs are still in the holes. In some cases I think the P was for ta delete, or maybe they were for cotton, liquefied Petroleum. Strangely the letters are in no particular order. In fact one is above the other.

Pics of the tag, and casting codes. The one on the center casting is not readable but you can see a plug in the hole. Same on the other side.

Serial is for a LP with IPTO and no T/A. My thinking is the serial is from a 450. Because of the number size and letters. Simple to tell if the center housing is from a later tractor. Look for the center housing casting number on the right side. If it ends in R2 its later than a SMTA. Thanks

I was thinking about it the other day and my theory is its an mta that has had the center section replaced due to some failure. They repaired it with what was handy.

See the casting number of the center housing in one picture now. But can't make out if the suffix is legible.
Looks like you have a SMTA except the serial plate or housing.

I do have one question though. The engine has a six diget serial number. Didn't the Louisville tractors have 6 ?

C-264 engine serial numbers started at 501 in SM tractors. They kept going through 400 tractors. They were 6 numbers before SMTA started being built and 6 numbers through end of production. Makes no difference on Louisville or Farmall engine serial numbers. 3 to 6 were used on SM engines installed both places.
Guessing by your date codes the engine number is between the 120,000 to 130,000 range.

Tractor serial number would have been in the 71,000 area. Assembled in may 54.
Original center housing should end in R1 like the picture. R2 would be from a 400 up. May be a little overlap in R1 and R2 near end and beginning of SMTA to 400. But not when your tractor was made and never found any crossed over so far.

Looks like I can either restore it without that tag or come off the wallet and change that section. I found a section from a smta that still has the tag and the price was reasonable but the shipping was not.
