Another question. Starter this time.

Okay so I took every ones advice. I went and got everything to make up 1 gauge battery cables. And wow it made a big difference. Tractor turned over a lot faster and tried starting a lot better. I still got the gas coming out of the carb but didn't seem as bad this time. when I went to adjust the idle screw to see if it would help it fire and keep running I let off the starter switch. I went and backed the screw out 2 turns. (it was not out that far to begin with) When I came back and hit the button to start it the starter made a clattering noise. it is spinning couse I can see it sparking off the brushes but it isn't turning the fly wheel. I took it off and tested it with it off the tractor and it spins freely. put it back on but it just clatters and no spin of the flywheel. I turned the hand crank to make sure the motor wasn't locked and it spins freely and can see fly wheel turning.

Is the starter now fried or am I missing something. I did use a 12 volt battery but I was told as long as I didn't crank it for a long period it would be fine. I didn't crank it for than 10 to 15 sec at a time. thanks for any help in advance.

Can we post videos on here if so I will take one and show you what its doing so you can see and hear it.

You may have knocked the ring gear loose on the flywheel, starter is turning that, but not the flywheel. Or the 12 volt jolt may have messed the bendix.

Could be a loose ring gear like Cole says. Could be a bad starter drive. Or it could be burrs on the ring gear teeth which can also cause that

Do you know what the bendix on the starter is? That is the toothed section about 1 1/2 inch diameter on the end that moves in and out to engage the ring gear. If those teeth are all chewed up, the solenoid is pulling into the proper position and it is "Chattering" on the ring gear. Replace if chewed up. Make sure the starter is flush and tight.
If not chewed up the gear on the flywheel I turning . Check that .

Okay so after a couple of beers and reading a few things I said screw it. I took the starter apart. The way I see it was if I screw it up and have to take it to someone I will be in the same boat as I am now. So what I found is that the final drive is broke. the thick coiled spring just under the teeth that slide back and forth. It is broke and I am guessing the clattering I am hearing is it spinning and hitting the other half of the final drive. so it is off to ebay to order a new final drive.

This site and others sell new style drives that cure a multitude of sins. The new style does away with the big spring. Jim
