Behlen p/s install on SMD

Mounting a Behlen power steering unit on a SMD. Is there enough clearance between the throttle control shaft and the behlen unit? or will i have to come up with a different throttle arrangement? anybody done this or have some pics of an installed unit on a diesel? thanks.

It should bolt right up if you have the correct mount on the torque generator. Are you running the pump off the tractor hydraulics or off a eaton style pump? I wouldn't go and cobble up the throttle assembly on a smd just to put a power steering unit on it. It is getting harder to find the throttle assemblys intact and in decent shape. If the torque generator doesn't fit right hold up and look for one that will. Most md's and smd's I have seen with power steering use a charllin style torque generator mounted under the hood and they use the factor throttle assembly. Most behlen set ups I have seen are on gas tractors and mounted on the steering post at light bar and I think if your using that set up you may have clearence issues. Good luck.

A friend of mine had a Behlen on a SMTA gas. But he had to get the hood modified a bit so it would fit as he didn't like the ones that are mounted outside on the steering wheel. His ran off the tractor pump with a flow divider. I suspect you would have the same hood clearance problem on a SMD. Al

Throttle shaft would need modification to get by the unit. Also won't work under hood without modification.

Has anybody converted the md throttle to a sawtooth type like the gasser has? That way it could still be returned to original it needed.
i have a char-lynn underhood on my MD and my other SMD, I have one more char-lynn system left but i'm saving it for my SMTAD. Had this behlen layin around and just rebuilt it so i kinda wanna use it. Hyd flow is coming off live pump with 3gal. priority valve.

Saw a few with a gas throttle but didn't see under the hood to see how they worked it. Saw more converted to the 400, 450 type throttle. But that runs into clearance problem with the power steering at rear also. Really the gas units rub the steering unit or are bent to clear.
If the throttle works okay one thing to try is find a extra MD shaft and modify it to clear. Think you could build a offset if needed that placed right with the throttle ark would work.

My SMD had a 400 throttle and a Behlen unit on it when I got it. It worked good but looked rough, so I switched everything back to stock. Since then, I have considered putting the Behlen unit back on and have pondered the exact clearance issues. From measurements taken, it won't clear by about an inch. On youtube I saw a fairly recent video of a SMTAD with a Behlen and what appears to be the stock throttle. I wish I could get a better look at that. Another poster on youtube by the name 1066power has a MD with the throttle shaft moving across to the right hand side via a couple of u-joints. His doesn't have a Behlen on it, but this set up looks like it might clear one.

The first youtube video was posted by doublejs32 and is titled 1954 Super MTA Diesel. It appears he tweaked the throttle over to clearance the Behlen unit. You can see it between 25 seconds and 35 seconds into the video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC9t8HJAJ6Q

Dan did you also have to repair the friction part at the cross shaft when switching back to original? Think that's the reason some were changed to the 400, 450 type throttle levers instead of fixing the friction assembly. Did yours also have the 400 fuel tank and steering support casting with throttle linkage?

i thought i remembered hearing about sawtooth conversions, but if you have to bend those as well, I guess i might as well just make a custom throttle shaft. it's just 5/8 rod with a half moon keyway and one bend. Make the rod clear the steering motor and i should be power steerin in no time. I'll post some pics if it works.

The friction portion was gutted. I had to buy those internal parts from FP Smith. Mine had the SMD fuel tank and SMD steering post. The saw tooth throttle was welded to a flat plate that bolted to the original throttle hole and the steering shaft passed through this plate. The throttle dropped down the right side of the casting under the gauges and then they welded a washer onto that casting and then drilled a hole through it to pass the throttle cross shaft through to the left side. It worked well. The tractor came from Minnesota maybe 10 years ago.

My tractor is a plain jain ole 1946 gasoline M. Have no idea how much a diesel would be different compared to a gasser, but maybe these pics help.
