Bearing direction

I am replacing inner axle bearing on a 350.When we pulled out the axle the outer bearing the closed part was to the inside. To my thinking it should be to the outside for the bearing to get oil.The parts book don't show much. What way should it be? Also we left the axle housing on but can't get the bull gear out.Any help on getting it out besides taking the pto all loose. Thanks

Shielded side of outer bearing goes toward center of tractor. That outer bearing is lubed through the grease fitting in end cap. I always packed the bearing upon installation. Pto will have to come out to get bull gear out. Also, those axle housing gaskets get all stressed out of shape and leak. Good time to replace it .

We replaced my inner axle bearing last year and we took out the inner shield so it would get lube from the transmission.
