I was reading in a SN guide today that indicated that there were only 2400 SMTAs made. Is that true? If so,that would make it more 'rare' than a 1026Hydro_On the other hand, there were 25,000 or so 450s. Doesnt seem quite right either.I,ve only ever seen just a few 450s. Anyone know the 'truth'? Thanks Steve

There were roughly 26,000 smta tractors built. Around 2500 were diesels. They also produced 64 high crops in the production run. There were also a few kero/distillates made as well but most were straight gas tractors. They could be ordered without a ta or independent pto as well, and were designated smta on decal but the decal didn't have the torque amplifier flag on the bottom. As far as the 450d's I think they only made a few thousand of them so they would be a little rare. The w450d is rarer yet.

Steve, The numbers for the production of SMTA's produced was a total of 26,924 which were all produced in 1954. Of that number 2,705 were gas start diesels. I got these numbers from Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book which is probably very accurate. Hope this helps, Hal.

There was a total of 23,167 Super MTA's made of which 20.462 were gas and 2,705 were diesel. The 450's in the three years of production there was 18,305 tractors produced.

Just another exhample of a listing about old tractors thats wrong ex this site doesent show the As and B,BNs built in Louisville in 47

Hal and others, think about it. SMTA serial numbers started at 60001 and ended at 83523. Those serial numbers were used for all types of SMTA tractors. So numbers built can't be over 23522. If anybody can figure out the exact numbers built my hats off to them. my opinion is between 23000 and 23380.
Didn't check this except in the past, but think I remember the 18000 or close to that someone posted for F450 built just covers the gas models.
Update, looking at the IH records I counted 25396 F-450 built of all types. Could have missed something or made a mistake so any corrections or input welcome.

But does it make sense that they would produce 27,000 SMTA's in 54 , yet in the next three years only 6000 per year 450's?

Farmall 450 numbers from other source and another book Guy Fay published show around 25,350 assembled.
Think the problem with inflated SMTA numbers is the tractors didn't start being built until after the beginning of the year and some regular SM tractors got included in the total.
